My friends rents a 20x garden plot down near Cherry Beach in Toronto. When he went to down to harvest some vegetables yesterday (Saturday) he discovered that his entire crop had already been 'harvested' by an organized gang.
Other garden plots were also stolen / destroyed and the thieves worked at night. Everyone is outraged - they called the police - it might be a big newspaper story in Toronto Star next week... I though it would be in the paper today but it wasn't.
Now the entire collective want to band together and hire security guards to 'drive by' a few times a night - and I wondered about getting Ontario homeowners insurance to cover a rented garden plot? Or could you register the collective as a business and get business insurance? Or rmaybe because he's just renting the plot he could get tenant's insurance? Does anyone have any ideas? advice? insights into this ??

was it in a well used area?
but than again i guess if someone is walking by they may assume its the plots owner doing the harvesting
It's a shame because what you have is so well intended. I would fence the garden plot....probably cheaper then hiring security. Insurance on this would also be more pricey then your yield. Tall fencing is key.
I have no idea about insuring it but it is something that I have thought about when I see people working their plots. I have often wondered if they get raided or ruined now I know that their are people out there that take anything that is out there and they feel it is theirs to take.
