Ceiling paint cracked and peeling

The ceiling paint in my kitchen is cracked and peeling exposing the plaster underneath. I think they used an oil base paint.
I also have a section that is sagging a bit from a previous leak in the bathroom upstairs.
I'm thinking, scrape all the loose paint and use drywall compound to smooth and fix the cracks.
Good idea? Any suggestions? Will it work? Help!!!
Thanks so much

Hi Grucat! Try and sand the peeling paint down to a smooth finish and go over your cracks as well. If they are not too deep or wide, I would get a good oil based primer...by Zinsser. It covers and will fill small cracks and discolouration. It adheres extremely well to peeling areas when sanded smooth. I have plaster cove ceilings, almost impossible to get clean..so we use it (after a good dusting) before applying any ceiling paint...We are in an older home and faint lines (previous cracks) will appear from time to time....when we just paint again. Please make sure your sagging section is secure before you do anything. Hope this helps. Another note about Zinsser primer is that you can have it tinted if you want.
