chalkboard project

I scooped this old spoon display piece from the thrift store with hopes of turning it into a chalkboard.  I love the shape of it!  I think it would be fun in either my kitchen or my dining room.

The woodgrain you see is actually formica, but I think primer will adhere to it nicely so I plan to use this side.  The back is wood that's a little rough.  It will be a bit of a challenge to get the strips of wood off the front, but I'll try the blowdryer first to see if a bit of heat makes it easier.

I have a can of chalkboard spray paint, but after rewatching Michael Penny's Make A Chalkboard Mirror online TV segment  I'm thinking chalkboard paint wtih a foam roller might be easier.

It reminds me a lot of this piece from Pottery Barn.  I'm going to keep these colours in mind in case I use a colour to frame the edges.  I may also add a crest-like shape up top with a monogram........I'm still undecided.  Lucky for me though, the wood strips were screwed in with only a bit of glue that left minimal residue which can be sanded smooth when I fill the holes.

Good luck prying it off, Dawn! It has a neat shape.

Great eye and good imagination Dawn.  Hopefully you can get the wood holder pieces off with little trouble.  If it makes too much of a mess, go ahead and paint it and then find some strips of stainless steel that you can glue back over the strips so it can be a magnetic board as well.
