Have you started your baking yet I am going to get all my ingredients this week for my cakes. It is a very old recipe that my French Canadian Grandmother left us. I have to make a double batch which makes 10 cakes as I have many people waiting each year for one. The house always smells so yummy when the fruit is sitting and the cakes are baking.

I am not baking alot this year as I am trying to lose weight and well you know how hard it is not to eat with a ton of stuff around. Next month I will make some sweets and send out to friends etc. I love to bake but I will end up eating some of it too.
My Mother called yesterday wanting to make and send me fruit cake but I declined .
This a Tortiere Pie recipe that is yummy. I makea few of these as they freeze so well. It is a fast supper with a salad of some type.
Tourtière
1 lb minced pork (or 50% pork, 25% beef or game, 25% veal)
1 small onion, chopped
1 small clove garlic, minced
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp savory
1 bay leaf
1/4 tsp celery pepper
1/2 tsp ginger
1/2 tsp dry mustard
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/2 cup water (or broth)
1/4 - 1/2 cup fine bread crumbs
1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan except the bread crumbs. Bring to a boil and cook 20 minutes, uncovered, over medium heat, stirring often to break up the meat. Remove from heat.
2. Add a few spoonfuls bread crumbs, let stand 10 minutes. If the fat is sufficiently absorbed by the bread crumbs, do not add more. If not, continue in the same manner. Cool and pour into a pastry-lined pie pan. Cover with pastry. Bake in a 500 F. oven until the top is well browned. Serve hot with chile relish or a chow-chow. (or ketchup)
I do not use game, but I do use a beef broth.
I don't have any pictures but I will dig out my recipe and post it. It is very good and it won't freeze even in the freezer it has enough rum and brandy to make extra special.Keeps very good and gets better with age just like all good things.
Jeep, do you have picture of cake, recipe to share?
I would love to try something new! Usualy I don't bake for Christmas, but your msg sounded very intriguing!
