Unfortunately, I don't have the name of the clematis I have. In fact I don't even remember what color the blooms are! I guess I will just wait and see what happens. Thanks.
Do you know what kind it is? I have a very small book that lists some. It appears there are 3 pruning codes, depending on which one you have. The biggest difference is that some flower on old growth from previous year, and some flower only on new growth this year.
and I still haven't quite figured out which is which myself!! there are good guidelines in the Encyclopedia of Gardening edited by Trevor Cole and someone else whose name escapes me at the moment. There also are a couple of reference books specific to clematises that you may wish to check. You could also google the name of the variety that you have and you may be able to find info on line. Mostly, I just let them do their thing.
