any good climbing plants (preferably perennials) that you recommend? i have a couple of trellises that are bare and thought about creating some drama with them. one had a skimpy clematis which i don't think will be returning (or maybe it's too early - have to read up on it). either way the clematis was in the shade and that may be why. i'd love something purple/blue, yellow, orange or white. i am in zone 5 with partial sun conditions. thanks!

I would love to have invasive ivy that just needed to be whacked back. Not a hope here in our zone 5 in Ottawa!! not even all of the SNOW is melted yet! Dare I say you are flaunting again, out there on the west coast :D
Ivy is very invasive. We planted it along an ugly fence in our last house. For the first couple years it was fine, but then it took over. My DH had to cut it back at least twice a year. He was ruthless with his pruning and it still was out of control. It looked great, but was high maintenance.
i have realized that the clematis is dead so i ripped it out. it never really did gorw well in that spot and i read that moving them is not a good idea. i recently ordered some plants online for that particular bed to i will have plants to fill it's place. just hope i don't have to wait too long for them! thanks all for yor suggestions...will look into them :)
I have a Honeysuckle serotina which has done extremely well with just morning sun. It blooms for a month and a half and is beautifully fragrant. The flowers are yellow and pinkish red. Berries in the fall.
Good luck!
Just wondering. I have a small book on clematis so I thought I could look up what it's like for you.
I bought 2 clematis plants last year, Jackmani and Nelly Moser. I left them in the pots and they have survived our fairly mild winter, and I''m learning as I go.
Unfortunately the only climbers I bought with colours you mentioned are the morning glories. They do well in sun and partial shade. One of my favourite climbers is the thumbergia vine, aka climbing black-eyed susan. It has bright orangy yellow flowers with a dark purple centre, the flowers are about 1 1/2" in diameter. I can't remember if they do well in the shade though, they are an annual too. You might want to check them out though, they are really pretty :) Sorry I can't be of more help to you :( I'll post more if I come across some :D
is in the ground. I just planted last year but I have been told that as long as you prune diligently. Meaning in the spring or late fall I don't think it would overtake your garden. I'll let you know in a few years though.
virginia creeper. It is lovely in the late summer and fall, the leaves turn a beautiful red. It grows well up anything too! I also like morning glories, they're an annual but they self sow. I'll have a look at my seed packets tomorrow and post the climbers that do well in the shade for you:D
is your ivy in the ground or in a container? i have read that ivy is very invasive - i don't want it to take over my small garden. would a container work if guide it to grow on the trellis?
I have climbing hydrengas and if you make the soil acidy they turn blue, neutral soil and they bloom white alkaline soil and they are pink.
I also have Boston ivy just for a different type of look and txture in the same area
