HELP!!
We are designing a new family room and have painted the walls a dark grey. The room has a cathedral ceiling and a large full window on one end so it let's in a lot of light. We purchased a new sectional in a suit grey color and navy blue leather chairs. I'm stumped on what to do with the coffee and console tables. Particularly since our floors are a very dark hardwood I'm worried about going too dark throughout this room.
We have a young son so don't want any glass tables or sharp edges.
Should we go with white? Cream?
Any ideas you can send out would be much appreciated.

I dont like white tables for your living room, I would like a dark wood for the table to go with your sofa the other colours of your furniture.
But you have to get a punch somewhere if everything is dark, a colour to matched with everyting in your accessories.
I came here since a long time and I am not good in french.
Very cool - so what do you guys think of this piece against that color palette????
Great mock up DBD. I like the looks of this.
Maybe this will help you decide.
trying with some colurs
Thanks dustbunnydiva. We have also moved away from the white table as we found that with everything else being darker toned we worried the white table would be too stark and float out there.
So we've moved on to something a little different....... we need a coffee table and a console (that will sit against a wall). For the console we were still considering something not too dark but more along the lines of the following. Do you think that would go? If so, what should we do with the coffee table? We don't want to go matchy-matchy??
I'm not warming to the white table idea (but as some may remember, white and light are not my idea of a good time usually). I'm just thinking that if I walked into a room with dark floors, greyes and navy, all I would see is the white table and nothing else. Sort of taking all the focus if you will vs working with the room as a whole.
Any chance you are considering an area rug in there at all? That could be the thing that breaks things up a bit between floor and table and then a nice black or dark table would fit right in (and if you work it right young sons leaving little prints etc might be less clean up on a darker surface).
Otherwise, what about a metallic finish of some sort instead of thinking wood or white? An antiqued chrome/silver or gold tone would seem bright without actually being bright and could withstand some abuse better than a lot of paints.
I would go with option 1 for sure. Option 2 would be a yes only if it was painted white.
Hello azb,
This would be a great question for our Ask A Designer section. You can contact Cameron MacNeil via http://houseandhome.com/design/design-decorating/ask-designer.
Good luck with the family room!

Option one - no contest - for me that is.
Thank you so much for your quick replies.
Would you ladies go with option 1 which is a white coffee table or do you prefer table 2 which is a lighter distressed wood table. Your opinions are valuable to me.
Thanks again
Option 1
Option 2
Mrs. Peacock nailed it. White is right although I would prefer the glass tables. I understand your concerns and rightfully so, but perhaps there exists white tables with glass inserts. Could always change them to lucite for now and then back to glass later when your son is older.
I think white would work beautifully with the other colours. Even an large ottoman in ultrasuede would work for the coffee table so he won't hurt himself if he bumps it. The end tables could be white or even something made of aluminum. Then nothing is matchy matchy.
This coffee table might work for you: it's round (no sharp edges), light coloured (so should stand out against your dark things but not in a stark way), and more beautiful than the photo suggests.
