Cotoneaster......Not so great

I'm not sure that I have the spelling right....mine were planted about 2 years ago and only some of the branches have "buds" on them. The other branches seem dried up and dead! Do I need to prune?

I have about 6 plants and am really disappointed in their perfromance. I am not sure what zone I am in (I live in Toronto, Ontario).

Thanks for any help.

see the NRCan website for plant hardiness -- google *plant hardiness Canada* and you shld find it.

Cotoneaster hedges --- well, when we started ours, I fertilized and mulched heavily. Made all the difference. Don't give up yet if you see no buds, but maybe soon! Contoneaster should be hardy to Toronto area! Ottawa is more severe. Biggest issue I think is dryness. Try scratching the bark off with a fingernail -- if it is green it is still OK. It is still early, depending on your exposure....
