The crown moulding should be the same color as the other moldings and baseboards in the room, not necessarily the same color as the wall or ceiling color. If you decide to paint your ceiling a color you wouldn't want your moulding the same color as it, you would want it to match the other mouldings in the room. Keeping all mouldings and woodwork in all the rooms the same color helps with the flow from room to room. I have white moulding throughout my house and some ceilings are the same or one shade lighter than the walls. The white moulding looks fabulous.
Not always, I mean you can use a contrast too. Just like a funky chair with an opposite color. Take your call.
Yes, I would paint it the same colour as the ceiling.
In my opinion, I would paint the crown molding either the wall colour or the ceiling colour but I think it would chop up the room too much if you leave it the wood colour. Where ever we put up crown molding, we painted it the same colour as the ceiling. We have very high ceilings and this wraps the ceiling down onto the walls and makes the rooms height look a little shorter.
