Curb appeal needed - need help

itsjustme's picture

Here is a diagram of my little house!
Now I need your help to decide what and where to plant shrubs or annuals or perennials to give this yard curb appeal.
From the sidewalk to the patio is a gradual incline, with steps going up.
So far I am thinking of long planters under the windows filled with geraniums, but what else? Where can I put some beds in?
Zone 5 and full sun. pleeease give me any ideas, thanks

Do you want to be able to wak from your driveway on the right onto the side walk. if not I would continute that bed on a curve down towards the street. i find the yard with the beds only in front of the house a little straight and I think a corved bed to the street would soften it . Remember to raise your beds up as they do better and helps with the weeds some.

You could also do beds flanking your drivewayS! :)

I just re-did my whole yard, front and back, so I'm still learning as I go.

I first put in shrubs that will (hopefully) stay evergreen through the winter. So when all the annuals and perennials are gone, there will be something left to look at! I put in dwarf cedars, some golden euonymus, & low mugo pines. I also put in some rhodos and a hydrangea because I loooove them (although I'm afraid of what the winter will do to them) as well as some barberry and boxwood. Oh, and some burning bushes (which may get huge and have to be moved one day). I have salvaged a lot of hostas from the garden that was there before.

I planted a perennial garden in the front (around the shrubs I had planted), At the bottom I put creeping phlox, then going upwards (bed is on a slight hill) there's some tickseed, shasta daisies, lilies (of an unknown variety, salvaged also), coral bells "palace purple" and "marmalade", and purple coneflowers. I bought 1-gallon plants, not the little bitty ones.

I also bought some wave petunias, celiosa, and gerberas to fill in gaps in other beds & around the backyard. Oh, and I put some coleus "wizard magic" across one bed as a border.

Hope that helps!

Hey Cat...I really like what Cazbah came up with too...I think yeah..low-growing shrubs and then pretty annuals in the window boxes and bordering the beds. I think maybe a stepping stone path on the right hand side..leading from what I presume to be the driveway to your side door?? Am I close on that assumption??

ooh, Cazbah I like, I like!
So would the little red dots be annuals? And then I would just get a couple of low shrubs? Any idea what type of shrubs I should look for?
mm, I might get digging today :D
I really like this, it is brilliant!

Here's an idea -you could put some beds in at the top, and leave the rest lawn. Maybe add something along the sides, or even at the bottom?

Alternatively, you could make a tiered garden out of the whole front, and replace all lawn with gardens. I will try and find some pics for you in gardening mags that I bought recently.

I would put in undulating gardens with low retaining walls along both sides of your front steps. They don't have to be high -- just one or two bricks in height. Don't plant anything that grows too tall, because you don't want to block your windows. I don't know what plants to suggest, because I'm not that knowledgeable when it comes to gardening. But plants that I like are creeping phlox, ornamental grasss, irises, forget-me-nots, impatiens, tulips, cosmos, hydrangeas, Japanese maple, silverleaf dogwood, hostas..... what colours do you like?? That will help with deciding what plants to get.

Container gardens are nice too -- maybe one of each side of the bottom of your walkway??
