OK

I would use about 12 or 14 grommets for those panels. The general Rule is 6 or 8 per 54"width of fabric.
Always use and even number of grommets!
I'd still like to know what others do. Because I've sewn for years, I'm always interested in hearing how others create their drapes. Maybe Cameron does his differently.
Thanks so much Dekota_Skye. I'l be sure to check the site again.
nafola,
I have seen the already made eyelet tapes at Bou-clair. You can check and see how far apart they placed the eyelets. There is also another type of eyelet tape that you can sew to the back of your curtain and then cut your holes, but I think that is different from the one Bou-clair has. I have seen this later one only online.
Nafola, when you scroll down on that page, there's a section header called Grommet Header - it mentions that you should space your openings approximately 6 inches apart.
I just noted that website as a reference, to have in case you needed to refer back. If you visit most any fabric website, they have sewing instructions for a lot of projects, grommets included. I've made several sets of draperies, and have learned that it really does depend on the fabric, on what kind of a header system you're using, and what type of hanging system you're using (rod or clips).
The standard for a lightweight fabric using a rod, would be 6 inches apart, depending on the size of the grommet. If you're using standard grommets, 6 inches is what you should be using. if you're using smaller grommets (1/2 inch) you will want to reduce that to 4 inches to prevent the fabric from drooping.
Sorry if that wasn't clear in my first post.
Sincerely,
DS
I checked out the Waverly site suggested by Dekota_Skye and although I found some other interesting projects I didn't see anything on grommet spacing. My curatins are 8' long and each panel is made up of two 54" wide pieces of fabric sewn together. The fabric is a polyerster silk blend unlined. It is not too heavy but there is alot of fabric. What is the standard spacing or the ideal spacing for the grommets?
Hi Nafola, I do sew quite a bit, but rather than ask a rash of questions like how large are the grommets, how much fullness will the panels have, etc., I thought I'd direct you to this - it will give you a good starting point. Waverly is really great for helpful sewing tips. It really does matter what type of fabric you're using, and size grommets.
One suggestion I'll mention....If the fabric is heavy, space them closer together than you would traditionally, because you may not like the puddling affect if there's too much space between them.

I hope that helps....
