OK

You could still do a bank of bookcases but you could just get some Ikea ones . Then get some abstraction and attach to the seams area two bookcases accommodated and acrylic or stain in the aforementioned colour.
You can put wall stickers or wall decals in that plain area. Go in for removable ones so that you can change it in future if you feel like changing. You can check out www.voilastickers.com for beautiful stickers.
Try to re arrange the furnitures that you have in the family room and make some changes to some on it to save money and time.
Hi! I'm not sure if you have already solved your problem but what if you put some artwork or a wall of picture frames/photos? I love filling my house with art (i love photography myself). There's a company called Eye Buy Art where you can get affordable art easily. Just a thought. Good luck!
The site I went to was: http://eyebuyart.com/
Is there any chance of moving the tv and stand to the short wall between the hall and the other doorway? You could still do a wall of bookcases but you could just get some Ikea ones (don't go all the way to the fireplace because of the existing trim and mantel). Then get some molding and attach to the seams where two bookcases meet and paint or stain in the same colour. Once you have them in place (one, two, or three or even four) run some crown molding across the top and they will then look custom made.
I will try to put another picture up but in the meantime to the right of the picture are windows.
More pics would be nice. I probably would tint the ceiling a bit lighter then the wall colour. It is hard to see what all is in the rest of the room so it is hard to advise. Cannot see the rest of the fireplace or what else is in the room. (windows?)
