decorating a preteens room

My daughter's room is a light purple and she would like to add some flowers to the walls. My daughter would like flowers with stems on them to remind her of outdoors. I have looked on line and in the stores for stencils or murals but have not been able to find any suitable. Do you know where I could find a stencil, mural of wallies of flowers with stems?

Any other suggestions for making the room more girly looking would be appreciated. My daughter is 8 but likes funky girl things and is very much a girls girl.

I am looking at adding a decons bench to her room which I will paint and add a design to once we have decised what to do with the room.

I have also found some flowers that are quite large and stand approx 2 feet from the floor as well as mini lights with pink flowers I thought I would put in the room.

The walls of my daughter's room are a light purple/violet colour. I purchased a decon's bench and my daughter would like it painted the same colour as her walls. I'm not sure it should be painted the same colour, I thought a darker shade of purple. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thank you for all the wonderful ideas, it certainly gives me areas to go with.

I am having alot of fun helping my daughter decorate. I am letting her have alot of say and she seems to really be enjoying the freedom to choose. Of course some of those choices are coming out of her own piggy bank and not mine.

Thanks again.

The canopy idea is a great one. My daughter is almost 7 and we are switching to a new theme of aqua blues and butterflies. I have attached tiny mesh butterfiles to the canopy. I also bought a petite chandelier from sears and added colored crystals and beads to the fixtures, this is a great way to accessorize. If you are looking for a floral mural, there is a company that has amazing rub on murals. Here is the address

, TSC or the shopping channel in Canada carries some of there products by tatouage.

Good luck,

Umbra has some with cool girly flower finials. A mini-chandelier can be decorated as well. Those are two things I'm doing in my little girl's room. I'm also decorating a mini lamp I picked up at Superstore - plain white.

and we have found lots of great things at Ikea for her room, including a great multi-hued, striped area rug, a big round mirror with an orange frame, a cool stainless bed, "Robin" yellow wardrobe and red bedside table.

She also has a beautiful lamp with a flower base and a pink, beaded shade from Pier One and great linens from Linens n Things that are multi-coloured patchwork on a white ground. You can find great bead trims at Michaels if you want to make your own shade.

I bought dragonfly pulls for her furniture - I know I have seen flower pulls at many places. You might also look for window "gels", that stick temporarily to glass and come in shapes that include flowers. We made a wall hanging from a "pareo" wrap skirt with a big colourful dragon - you might check import shops for pareos, which are just rectangular pieces of fabric with fringed trim - I have seen lots with flowers and they are big impact for little dinero.

I love picking things for my daughter's room, which is the most colourful and cheerful room in the house!

Ikea has some lamps with polka dot shades.
I have seen flowers cut out of wallpaper and glued to the wall. Also same flowers glues to window blind. A" teacher's store " has all kinds of neat thing to decorate classooms, you may be lucky there.
Have fun!

Hi. I don't have any suggestions for the stencils but another idea for her room might be to get one of those mosquito nets on a ring to hang over her bed. They can be purchased at Ikea and alot of other stores now. Girls seem to love them.
If your daughter wants a flower theme then maybe you could hot glue small silk flower heads randomly all over the netting. You could also glue anything else on like beads, sequins, silk butterflies, etc. Craft stores would have lots of different things available.
Covering a plain lamp shade with silk flowers is popular right now too.

I remember seeing in a past issue of House and Home they also had lots of ideas with silk flowers like spelling out name on wall in silk flowers and glueing them where knobs are on a dresser and several others.

My niece and I when she was 12 made a feather boa lampshade out of the play feather boas. (Barbie aisle at Walmart) We just wrapped the lamp shade with the feather boa securing it with a glue gun then bought cheap $.99 necklaces from the dollar store and cut them into tassles and put them around the bottom. She loved it because she did it herself. (I just helped) Her girlfriends loved it so much she helped them all make unique ones over the next couple of months. Her tastes have changed since then, but the lamp has stayed. She's going to be 15 this summer. It could be a jumping off point for the room.

Good luck, it can be alot of fun when the preteen participates in the process. If it ends up a little tacky, you can close the door! What is important is whether she loves it.

if you had access to a projector, you could have your daughter pick out her favourite flower picture from a book for example, photocopy or trace it onto tranparency sheet and then use the projector in the room to transfer the design on the wall?

Just a thought if you can't find a stencil anywhere.
