I will be painting and decorating for a client in a few weeks and was hoping someone could offer some suggestions with a decorating dilemma I have been challenged with.
The home has a gas fireplace in the living room which has an over sized insulated, plastered stack above it. It sticks out like a sore thumb, especially when you are looking right at the television positioned in front of it!
I would appreciate any ideas anyone has on how to make the stack appear more subtle or hide it completely.

Thanks for your suggestions.. I love the idea of hanging the TV on the box! My only concern is the open staircase behind the fireplace. That area of the stairs would have to be drywalled and closed in to accept the new box. It would definitely be the right way to do it, but may be a bigger project than the homeowner is willing to agree to. I was thinking of making a wooden screen, something like a tri-fold fireplace screen or room divider to perch atop the mantle in between the stack and TV that goes all the way up to the ceiling...
Boxing it in is a good suggestion. But, before trying that - try painting it the same color as the backgroud walls - see if that makes it "disappear." If it works, this would be a simpler and cheaper option. If it does not work, all the suggestion by Northern Miner are excellent.
Box it in. Only way to make it go away. Then on the box you can do some creative things - shelves, tiling, pictures etc. You could also mount the TV to the box and free up some space on the mantle.
