Designing an Open Concept Plan

My husband and I are building a new home with a very open concept main floor.  The kitchen, dining area, and living room is one large area 36x16.  We are really struggling with how to make a cohesive look throughout the room.  Do we do dark wood floors and light/white cabinets? Should our mantel be white if the cabinets are white?  We really like mixing old and new pieces but aren't sure how to balance everything.  Any suggestions would help!

Many of these pieces focus on using a common "thread" throughout the space to keep the room feeling cohesive — be that a particular colour, fabric, window covering, etc.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Seema
