I never took much of an interest in them years back, but I bought a few packages of the tubers a couple of years ago so I could try some of the taller varieties. They were quite nice in the garden, a joy to deadhead as there were always tons more blooms on the go and never a time where the plant was without flowers. Last year I tried a few of the larger flowering ones known as 'dinnerplate' dahlias to some. The blooms are fewer, but the flower itself is just magnificent!
Here's a shot of one I got this year as a package of tubers on clearance late in the season. It's called Holland Festival. This flower is a MONSTER and measures just under 10" across. It's one of the dinnerplate ones, and described as 'orange', but in person the orange is quite subtle and combined with a lot of pink tones. Check out the colour of the stems too, which almost look black.
