You might be able to replace the grill unit with a couple more burners. My brother had a Jenn-Air cooktop that had modular parts that you could swap in and out depending on what you wanted to do.
Like this----------- There is plenty of room in the bottom cabinet (2 doors as we built a shelf under cabinet and still have room under the shelf for oils, deep fryer, spices etc. We are in the middle of a kitchen reno now so things are quite a mess! The downdraft comes out approx. 10" from the back of my cabinet but it is deep as it is in an island. My cooktop is a few years old now. The next one that I would go for would be the induction.! This one is very easy to clean (magnetic knob that just sits there and if something boils over remove the knob and it shuts everything down.) My last cooktop had 5 or 6 knobs that controlled the burners and it was a PITA to clean as I was always having to pop off those knobs to clean it! I must be getting lazier with age! :biglol:
I know I need a 36" cooktop. so you have 5 burners and a downdraft...where did you get it/what brand is it? are you in love with it? With how far it goes down into the whole are you able to have any storage underneath it?
My cooktop is 36" by about 21". It has 5 burners. The downdraft fan when down into the counter is 36" by 2"
there is a downdraft on the cooktop and the fan with the microwave. Although I am notorious for burning food I don't think I need two fans:D
When I looked at the cooktop I never thought to look to see if the cooktop was vented or if it was the charcoal stuff. I think I may head back up and attend the home inspection so I can inspect a few things myself...
The current cooktop only has two small burners (and the grill thing)- I know already that I want more than two small burners. I need at least one large one - I know that for sure. The cooktop is in really really really bad shape too.
If you have a microwave/fan unit over the cooktop then you would not need a downdraft fan as well. The cooktop is probably already vented with the fan over it. (does it circulate the air (charcoal filters?) or is it vented to the outside?) I just read your other post about the house. Do you know if there is a downdraft fan too? I went with the electric cooktop as I did not want to get into cleaning grates with the gas burners after having smooth top ranges for years. The induction cooktops are really nice. My sister has one. They really heat up fast.Thy are almost an instant heat. We did a demo with pots of water on the burners all at the same time and they boiled exceptionally fast. You can also lay a piece of paper on the burner-put your pot on the burner and cook something and the paper won't burn. You are right about the pots. Use a magnet and you want the magnet to stick to the base of the pot. If it clings weakly or not at all then you don't want it for induction cooking. They are about 2000 dollars, though. My cooktop is a Bosch with a Bosch downdraft fan. The downdraft fan was over 1000 dollars. If you are worried about what to do live with what you have for a bit if you get the house and go from there. Rome was not built in a day and sometimes living with it you will get more of a feeling of what you want!
there is already a microwave/fan unit overtop the cooktop. I also would like to have as many burners as possible - even considering splurging for an induction cooktop (I need to check if my pots will work first).
I have never owned a cooktop and do not know anyone who has so I am completely lost on how to start investigating them...
I don't understand the question. If you have the downdraft fan, why would you not use it? We have an electric cooktop with a downdraft fan and we got the downdraft fan to eliminate a vent or hood hanging above the cooktop as it is in an island.
Would that be eliminating any venting? If so I think you need to add something over top. It does not have to be vented, but there should be a fan and filter to trap grease.
