Even the name of these things has always grimmed me out. The only solace is that they must exsist for a reason - whatever it may be. The little rotters were eating the leaves of my rhodies [small, half-circle holes on the edges]. Even though I have my BC Pesticide Dispensing certificate, I abhor using chemicals.
My fav all-purpose pest killer is diamataceous earth. This consists of ground-up fossils. Pool filters use the same thing. It's found in every 'organic' bug killer. Check the active ingredient percentage on the label. The higher the number - incomparison to price - is best.
This product works by slicing the insect's body when it moves over the dust. It then dries out and dies. Works well on slugs too. It will kill whatever insect it comes in contact with, so use carefully.
It usually comes in a big squeezable "tube" with a pointy spout on top. This is used as a dust so a little goes a long way. DO NOT breath in. I like to get right in under leaves and along the branches of the rhodies. Dusting at the base is also a good idea. [Wherever you think the wretches are travelling]. Whenever I see chew-holes on almost anything [especially Hostas] I give it a puff of diam. earth. Must be re-applied after rain.
Hi! Spraying is time consuming, I would suggest trapping earwigs with a damp rolled up newspaper, lay a couple of rolls in your shrubbery. Next morning shake them into a pail of very hot soapy water. Also, you could bait them with earwig bait with carbaryl. Use a lidded margarine tub, punch 1 cm holes on the sides near the bottom. Add about a teaspoon of bait. Place container under leafy shrubs, steps, any dark areas like under decks.
Results should start in a couple of days. Good Luck!
