Electric Panel

Tried putting this under another forum but it wouldn't let me so I'll post here and see what sort of responses I get.

We have a 100 amp panel with fuses in our old house and I would like to upgrade to circuit breakers and put in a new panel. How much would one expect to pay to have this done.

So far I got a quote for $1,600. I was told to expect a cost of between $800 - $1,000. Now I'm not sure what it would cost and wonder if anyone else has done this recently.

Your quote sounds pretty reasonable. There may be permit costs as well - my local municipality adds a nice little $350.00 charge for turning the power to the house on and off.

I'm finding electricians are about $80 or $85 p hour. The trick is to get the wiring done right by code. And if you're changing the amperage, you need to ensure the amt coming into your home is right and is done right. Given my current project, I'm not surprised at your $1600 quote. I wonder if calling the Eklectrical Safety Authority (at least that's what it is called in Ontario), would be helpful for a 2nd quote - would they reocmmend another electrician?

I got a ballpark quote from a very reputable electrical firm (think big TV show) in the Toronto area for upgrading my 100-amp circuit breaker to a 200-amp. It was going to be about $3,000, including permits and inspections. Maybe more if the drop to the house needed to be upgraded. I think that was a pretty high quote and I haven't sought any others. The home inspector had told us it would cost $1,200 to $1,500, but I think his estimates were outdated. I'd be curious to hear if others have had this kind of work done and what it cost them.

I'd say the $800 - $1000 would be pretty realistic. I can't remember what I paid 2 years ago, but it was in that neighbourhood (and I had to pay for permit too). Mind you, I also had to pay to have my meter moved outside at the same time so that may have added to my cost.

That sounds about right. Electrians are not cheap.
