I copied this from an email I got yesterday. Yes, it works.
Email font size for reading
THIS IS FOR ALL YOU OLD ?? PEOPLE
I just found this out and thought I'd pass this on. It's very useful when
trying to read small print (especially in the early hours). If you hold
down the Ctrl key on your key board and then turn the small wheel in the
middle of your mouse away from you or towards you, the print size will
change - it will either get larger or smaller - depending on which way you turn the wheel
Try it !

And they say size doesn't matter, bang goes that hypothesis :D
It may depend on which browser you're using, but you can do the same thing to make the text on web pages bigger or smaller.
And when you create a new email the font will appear this size and darker too. I don't think it stays larger for the recipient.
It works I tried it. Really helps when you get small print Thanks. It even makes it darker.
