Haaaaaaaaa, I think our father's must be related!! My father stands up grabs the bread and rips it over the table, till everyone has crumbs all over themselves and their heads.
on the number of people. I love serving individually when I can, but for big family dinners we put all the platters on the table. Big parties, 20 or more I set up various tables for each of the courses...and much like elise my centerpiece is usually tossed aside:( Then my father proceeds to spill his wine( & everyone else's around him) within 5 mins. of starting dinner... my poor white dining room chairs...of course then it is followed by chaos of everyone yelling at him, people scrambling for towels & anyone to either side of him bolting to avoid being splashed...it has become quite comical really. A scene right out of Martha Stewart's "dining with the family" haha!:D
vancouver all is out on various platters but in Montreal each person is served. I`ve found that they don`t do the help yourself thing or buffet. Cultural thing ??? It`s exhausting hosting Christmas dinner though.........
of 18-24 at least 3 or 4 times a year, we set up a beautiful long table and have all the food set up in a warming station. My father bought it used years ago. All the food goes in plastic tubs which fit perfectly together and steam from below keep everything perfect. Guest just serve themselves. We keep gravy, bread, butter etc, for passing at the table. The traditional routine is that my mother picks the "slow eaters" to begin at the buffet...her logic has been proven as we all enjoy eating at the same time, with minimal traffic. It is quite funny sometimes, when my father drops off the "pre-determined container to fill, with instructions to bring "no more, no less" and hot! :)
My mom has actually gone as far as removing my centerpiece so we would have room for more food on the table!! She says "Eine oreo alla parto tora" "it's very pretty but take it now"!!!
but in my family we (i.e. the women) circulate with the big platters of food and everyone takes what they want. If my grandma was still alive then I would have said "and she decides how much food you are going to have". The platters then go back to the kitchen until we are ready for seconds or thirds or forths. With the bottles of wine, the hunks of bread, at least 4 kinds of Greek cheese, the tzatziki, taramosalata, olives and peppers, there is never enough room on the table for the actual food itself.
LMAO Elise....love the spoon-feeding scene !!!
We had a Thanksgiving dinner a couple of years ago for our friends who don't have family in town. There were 12 of us sitting around the dining room table, and we just put out all the food on the table and passed the dishes around. There were even a few buns tossed from one end of the table to the other :D
