Have you ever tried Dragon Fruit? My 7-year-old son pointed it out at the produce market, and told me I HAD to buy it. His class tried it at school and he wanted us to try it at home. It's not something I ever saw at the produce stand before, but maybe it was a promo item because of Chinese New Year.

I don't have a picture, but trust me when I say this thing looks unusual. It's kind of a hot pink and it has thorny-looking things that remind me of either an artichoke or a pineapple, and the thorns are a cool chartreusey green. I'm thinking in the right room, these things would look fabulous in bowl out on a table somewhere. The info sign over them at the produce store suggested the flavour and texture is similar to kiwi, just not with the sour that is with kiwi, and I'd say that is about right. The flavour is more to me like a green grape, or even a bit like those lychee balls. The fruit inside is white, and speckled with black seeds that are edible like those in kiwi.

When I brought the first ones home I realized I did not know how to open it, so I just cut slices with the peel on so we could eat them like orange slices. I think they are prettier with that bit of fuschia pink peel on. The second time I bought some I mentioned this to the cashier and she told me you can just peel them from the top like a banana. (never would have guessed that! )

Anyway, we give Dragon Fruit a thumbs up. DD especially loves it. Funny though, my son wasn't eager about it once we were at home. He just wanted us to get in on trying something new as he did with his classmates at school.

That is one freaky looking fruit!! I've never seen or heard of a dragon fruit before. Thanks for posting about it -- I'll look for it next time I'm at Loblaws or the fruit & veggie store.

When my then 4yr old watched Daniel Cook tasting various types of unusual fruit, he begged me for weeks to get him a dragon fruit as well as star fruit and pomogranate. We found them at Superstore and even though the dragon is a beautiful fruit, we were hoping it would be sweeter. We all enjoyed it.
