We are looking to resurface our carpeted stair case and am wondering if any one had had any experience doing this themselves. We wouldliketo match up with our existing Mirage hardwood floors and am looking fro some sort of 'kit' that may make it a bit simpler? We have 12 steps, two landings plus one rounded step at the bottom. The steps are open on one side with spindles mounted directly on the step ( not boxed stairs). Next question- if the upper level is all carpeted in the same carpet do we hard wood the upper hall and leave the bedrooms or leave the entire upper level carpeted and finish the hardwood stair resurfacing at the top step?

Hi Riveredge,I am in the process of doing exactly that. I put hardwood on the upper landing and am painting the stairs white and instsalling a carpet runner. There are solid oak stair treads that you can buy and stain to match your hardwood, but you would have to remove the railing, in which case I'm not sure if you can reinstall it or if you would have to install a new one. My railing is the same, which is why I opted to paint the stairs.  They're just rough pine, but I filled tham and sanded as best I could.I painted the spindles white and stained the posts and rail to match the floor. If I get a chance, I will post some pics soon.Erin
