This is where my weekend went. The space shown is above the closet in my foyer which is open to the second story.

and a simple bar for in the dining room above the hutch. I think it needs something though. Any suggestions?

You've come up with the perfect way to add glass shelves to your niche :)

I think shelves that go right across the niche will really look good -- it'll give you more of a custom, built-in look.

The ikea floating shelves are the same size as the glass shelves and would not extend the entire length of the hutch. I did have 1 brown shelf the same size in there, but IKEA hasn't gotten any more in in 2 months so I gave that up. Maybe custom glass shelves is the way to go. I could cut wood braces for the sides and back for the shelves to sit on and paint them out the same colour as the wall. Good suggestion. Thanks girls ;)

I just posted, but lost it.

I too said, in the space I can see 2 or 3 thick dark IKEA floating shelves.
Great nook area.

Also, I agree, I think the closet would look great same color as banister.
(possibly painting out white trim as well, around closet)

No idea how to make glass-looking shelves in a mock-up, but here's wood....

I had another thought while I was walking the dogs (inspiration hits me at weird times!!) What about putting up shelves that extend right across the wall behind the hutch?? They could either be glass or wood. And if you want to get REALLY adventurous, what about a pot light in the ceiling above the shelves??

gotta love the perks that come with the job!

The artwork in the room is all in blues and so I would like to keep it similar. It will probably look better when we start buying more bottles. That is DH's job as he is the one that drinks it. I only use the Bacardi for rum balls and the raspberry flavored stuff to flavour my truffles.

Favorite bottle of booze is the wine on the hutch. I do not drink the hard stuff, but DH does. Never aquired a taste for it. DH works in the hospitality industry. Booze is considered part of the salary package. Nice job huh! :D

i'm really liking that blue....it's a good choice....if you're planning to add a third shelf, perhaps you should reduce the space distance between them..just slightly higher then the tallest bottle.....what's your favorite bottle of booze on the shelf....i used to work in the hospitality industry and am always curious what people drink...and your preferance would be??

I think I prefer the hutch with the lamp and the candlesticks -- they add some height to the hutch, which I think looks more interesting than everything being at the same height. Although that being said, I do like the look of the three shelves. But things might get too crowded with tall items on the hutch AND the three shelves. Hmmm.... tough decision!!

What about putting the bottles on the shelves into little groupings, instead of spreading them out evenly??

Is the colour in your mock-up from one of your pieces of artwork?? I prefer the darker colours, but it's probably better to use a colour that ties into the room in some way. And a colour that YOU like, of course!!

What do you think of this. Get rid of the light and replace with a smaller one, and add another shelf.

I tried some different colours on the wall. The lighter blues & greens didn't look as good as these darker colours (just my opinion).

Hmmmm, that red looked a bit less vibrant before I save id as a .jpg!! But you get the idea.....

What about painting the wall that the hutch and shelves are on?? Maybe a watery blue or another colour from one of your pieces of artwork.

I agree with the suggestions to add some drink-related items, like a shaker and ice bucket. They'll add some interest and weight and sparkle to the wall.

Oh, and if you're planning to paint your closet doors a dark brown, check out Sico Nunavut. It's gorgeous :)

MM, your place looks great. I love the little vignette above the closet..great use of otherwise wasted space.
When I read some of the suggestions for your bar area..I immesiately remembered this gorgeous stuff from Pier 1. You said your artwork had a water theme..so I'm guessing aqua and teal and the like...well just take a looksy at this stuff. There's so much to choose from on their website...including matching glassware and bottle stoppers and all kinds of gorgeous SS stuff.
Hope this helps.

good morning...i love your home....from the pics you've been posting it appears to be very chic and glamourous. go for the bittersweet chocolate...i used an expresso colour on the widow frames of my living room and it's incredibly dramatic...i love it. with regards to your simple bar, i think you should get a silver ice bucket, tongs and silver cocktail shaker...it would give a great focal point and also compliment the silver in the hutch below.... you might think about having a piece of glass cut to fit over the top of your hutch, so it won't get water damaged from the nights you have to many margaritas :D ...you can also get some pretty funky wine openers now...good luck!!!

I think they would look good in bittersweet chocolate (BM). WIll probably try that next. The wine glasses are all on another shelf on the other side of the dining room. The other pictures in the room are a water theme in blues and greens all by group of seven artists. I think you guys hit it on the head with some smaller pictures just above the buffet. Will try to find a few more. I am looking for a martini shaker and some stainless steel martini glasses. Can't touch them myself, but my sister loves them. Thanks guys!

painting your closet doors black or the same color as your railing?

Oh yeah, I like Jeep's idea about the glasses!
Maybe a third shelf below the existing two with a row of the glasses?

I think you could use a Martini Shaker and some Martini glasses or a couple of nice Wine glasses. I also like the suggestion of a bar related picture. Very nice area over the stairs love the colors.

Great little vignette up there...nice and crisp and perfect blend of shape, colour and texture.

Yes, I think the bar needs something too to draw the viewer in. Either a simple rectangular mirror or a colourful, bar-themed picture / poster.
