Fireplace Colour/Design ideas?

I am unsure what colour to paint the area around the fireplace. Right now it is still the colour that the walls were when we moved in. Since moving in we painted the rest of the room BM Stone House but left the area around the fire because we were not sure what to do.

Also, any ideas for the tile above the fire? They are an awful grey, white, and pink to match my entrance way tile which could also stand to be replaced.....

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Thanks so much for welcoming me. I have been reading non stop since I found this forum. What a wealth of information. I hope to help out where I can, everybody so far has great ideas. Here are some more pics. The walls that are pink in colour are drywall, but there are three tiles above the fireplace and more tiles at the bottom as a slight step.

Can you tile right on top of other tile or would you remove the old tile first?

Should I accent the pink dry wall with a dark colour or hide it with a light? Is this a feature I want to stand out or is it dated?

Thanks so much for your ideas.

Hi Isey,
Wow, that is a really interesting feature. I would be tempted to paint the area in a dark brown/black or dark red - that is if you want it to be the focus of the room. If not I think you'd be best to choose something with less pinky undertones (that's what shows up in the photo). Maybe the tile could be replaced with some granite or stone.
