Thought you might like to see our before and after pictures of our fp mantle in the lower level. I'm very happy with the results. It was a team effort, my FI stained it dark brown (pratt & Lambert) and I varnished (mat). The brass was sprayed with special heat resistant spray paint.

I'd like to try that as well. Curious, could I paint on the ceramic tiles. Do I need to use heat-resistant paint there too.
Looks great!
Heather :)
did you just spray directly over the gold or was there some prep work?
Trixyblues78 thanks for explaining what you used for your great make over! It looks wonderful!
Can you please tell us if you just stained right over the existing finish of the wood or did you 'prep' it first by sanding or stripping off the clear coat? If you didn't then that would explain the need for 8 coats but in my opinion doing 8 coats is easier then sanding and stripping!
Did you do any sanding between coats? And can you tell us what type of brush you used?
You took a builder's basic fireplace and turned it into a very contemporary, expensive looking piece! You should be proud!
A little slow seeing this, but wanted to say, WOW...great job.
What a transformation....people really shouldn't settle for something they don't like, when they can get those kinds of results.
beautiful...............
Hi, this is the FI here. For those who asked and are interested in the products we used, here you are:
- the black paint used to cover the brass is a special kind of spray paint designed for high-heat resistancy; the product we used was called Rust-Oleum Specialty High-Heat paint for BBQs, etc. You can probably find this or a very similar product at Home Depot or other hardware store.
- the stain for the fireplace was Pratt & Lambert's Walnut Grove stain; just a basic dark brown - don't forget to stir well before using! I applied it overtop of the previous finish so it didn't absorb into the wood. It took 8 coats to get it that dark. A bit of waiting time, but well worth it.
- the finish used over the stain was Pratt & Lambert's Oil Clear Finish - Satin. Again, stir well before using because the satin compound settles to the bottom. But this is seriously a great product and gives you an amazing finish.
Good luck DIYers!
what type of spray did you use onthe brass as our new home has the same problem. Yours turned out great
What a transformation....good job and great colours together.
It looks very chic. Well done!!!
it looks like an entirely different fireplace! what is the name of the color you used from p&l? is dark brown the actual name?
Oh that looks so much better and really goes nicely with your wall colour. Nice job and way more atmosphere than the before.
....phenomenal job you guys did. That is sooo dramatic, smoky and moody. I love it. How are you accessorizing it?
Great job and thanks for sharing!
congrats
You and your DH did a great job! Looks very sophisticated!
It looks just perfect I love the all black fireplace. You must be so proud. It feels good when you do it yourself Congrats.
What a change that is! I really like it. The new fireplace has a lot more drama, and looks very nice with your wall colour!
The mantle is not dressed yet, but I'm so happy with the results.
