Fireplace /TV wall - need inspiration please!

Mrs.Fancy's picture
Mrs.Fancy

Here is a picture of my fireplace/tv wall. Not that it's ugly, but it doesn't go with my new style of furniture (grey sofa and black chairs). Since the photo was taken I already got a white coffee table that was posted on other forum
http://forums.houseandhome.com/showthread.php?t=20639&f=10&page=2&pp=15.
I am planning to remove wine racks from both sides of TV and replace it with drywall. Mantel is very basic. What should I do? I don't like it.
Please help with inspirations - something interesting and new. or anything..
Thanks.

windsor: I can not remove the ledge because of the wall design - the bottom half with FP is a flat wall, while the upper half with TV has shape of 'bay-window'. I am going to paint the edge of it the same colour as wall.

anrol: I don't want to encourage my DH to leave those wine racks - he is not a handyman, so every time he tries to find an excuse why not to change/buy something that is in my design plan.;) But your idea is not bad at all.

Mrs.Fancy---looks a lot better! Have you thought about painting the wine racks the same colour as the wall to make them less obvious until you decide what to do?

Glad you're getting rid of the wine racks. Personally I can't think of a worse place for storing wine than over a fireplace. Who wants to cook their wine? What on earth was the builder thinking?

Carswell, I don't have panelling anywhere in the house and I want a minimalistic look which should go with my contemporary/modern design.
Wine racks came from previous owner - they did it themselves, because at that place they had a huge dining area and tiny TV. In this case it made sense. But when I moved in I reassigned the functions. Now it's dining + familys room in one space. So now those wine racks are totally nonsense (although they perfectly match the kitchen, but who cares).

Way nicer surround on the FP. I like the new look a lot. Nice job.

... and this is what I ended up with:

(the wine rackes are still there, so I photoshoped the upper part - this is the goal how it should look like), but the buttom part is real.

I'm guessing it would be hot but you really should find out from the pet store (one that has people who know what they are talking about).

Hi all, I just found this site and I'm glad. I'm hoping to redecorate my new home in the next little while so it's great to be able to share ideas.

Could a fish tank be placed on top of a fireplace with a mantle or do you think the mantle would get too hot when the fireplace is on?

Interesting idea - thanks, eys. Believe it or not, but I had a thought of covering side parts with mirrors. But then it would be too much distraction when watching TV. Maybe slate will be more appropriate and it will 'share' something with the kitchen that has black granite (kitchen is also part of the open space).

What is the name of the colour you have on the wall there?

I found a can with the paint from prev. owner. It says CC-320 (handwritten), Benjamin Moore. I don't know if this is the correct name, or maybe owner just used the can.

I agree with making the fireplace stand out more...looks like you are going pretty modern in your space with alot of black ....I would tear out the existing mantel and tile and replace the entire fireplace area with wall to wall slate right down to the floor...to solve the problem of the tv looking like it should be lowered but u can't move it...instead get a wide thick piece of trim to replace the white one above the fireplace and paint it black...then your tv will look like it's hung now at the correct height in relation to the mantel...I agree with moving the wine racks on either side....I would also paint that one wall directly above the fireplace in a silver/gray tone...something that will go with the beige you allready have on the other walls...that way your tv wouldn't stick out like but blend into the wall like the second mock up...just some ideas for you! eys :)

To bad you missed it I only caught a part of it but he said later int he show he was going to deal with the TV over fireplace issue. He claims it is the problem on the decade. Everyone has it and doesn't know how to deal with it and I heard him say instructions for somethings will be on the website so maybe take a look.

Well, I missed it... Did anyone watched the show today? Was it any good?

Now, when I look back to my 2 mock-ups, I really like them, but I think they will be too big for my area - I have very small space between fireplace and sofa.
DecorGuy has a point with those minor changes. I will definetely think about it.
Thx!

I actually think you are so close as you are. You are on the right track to drywall over the wine racks. In my opinion, you have a fireplace and a tv on one wall...thats enough of a focal point as it is, you dont need it to stand out any more.. My suggestion for the fireplace is to remove the scrolly thing that goes across the top of the mantle (personally dislike those) and then replace the tile around the fireplace insert with a nice dark stone...like a black slate. and leave it like that.

Whenever I see plasmas mounted they ALWAYS look better when they have a clean wall to rest on.

what a coincidence! I didn't mean that big audience. ;) But hey, thanks a lot, anrol! I don't know how (because I work), but I'll think of way to catch it. It must be something for me!!!

I think you have the idea, Mrs Fancy. It really looks great! I like the colour of your walls. Unless you really want another colour on the fireplace wall----I would paint it the same. The white mantle would really do something for that wall, though. Hey----- maybe you could paint the wall behind the mantle black like Cathie did with her den. Bold!

i like both of the mock ups you did....ecspecially the first one....and it even makes the tv look more grounded....good luck!

Lasalle, ManoloWitch,Pearl_girl, anrol, redroze,cathie -
thank you all!!!
I guess I'll work in the direction of my last pictures. Unless somebody will post totally different opinion and I'll be confused. Well, I am still up to the challenge! ;)

my vote goes with mock up #1.....it's gorgeous!!

Both are big improvements on the mantel and the look of your fireplace. This is the direction you should be going. Like I said before you need substance to this firplace.

redroze:
I can not repaint the room because I have an open concept and it means I will have to repaint the whole floor. In the pic it looks a little bit pinkish, but it's not, it's like on the first 2 pics - light beige - very neutral.
anrol:
according to your 'directions' I did a mockup with 2 different mantels.

redroze's picture

I think you need to repaint the room in a gray-toned neutral. I think the creamy walls don't match with your gray and black furniture.

I agree that your tv looks too high. Can you move it lower so it's just above the mantel? The horizontal moulding above the mantel also visually cuts up the wall by stretching too far over to the sides. i would suggest removing it altogether.
