First few changes to my living room....

OK, thanks to you gals and guys here at the H&H Forums, I have started working on my living room. You may remember this picture of what I had to start with:

So, I decided to stick with the harvest gold walls. I found an area rug that I fell in love with. It contains black, harvest gold, taupe (colors I already have) and adds a few shades of a pale burnt orange and sage and olive colors.....and NO burgandy like our former living room. The rug was on sale for $450, but I did some snooping around and got it for $277 delivered (free shipping, 15% off coupon and the 5x8 rug was out of stock, so they substituted with a 6x9). Unfortunately, the flash washes out the brilliant colors in the rug. I swapped spots with the couch and the loveseat and turned the coffee table around. Move the end table and lamps too. Added some cheap burnt orange placemats on all three tables and that is where I currently am. Next up comes curtains, throw pillows, mirror or picture over couch and a few nick nacks. Other ideas might include hardwood floor and oak crown molding. Anyway, here is a "in progress" photo to show what I have so far:

I absolutely love the wall sconces on either side of the mirror - they looks great. Your room is looking amazing - I love the orange accents too - great deal on the vase - you gotta love it. Good work.

You are really into this! It's really looking great. Good for you, Scott! Everything seems to be coming together for you. Great job!

boy when you compare your first picture to this one you can see the room has become so much nicer and more homey too. You're doing a great job (especially considering you're finding such deals).

I'm another who would leave the floor lamp where it is as it seems to fill that space very well.

okay what is up with this?....i have been working tirelessly for a coons age on our living room to pull it together and im still far from being done (everything i try fails  ).....and look at your room and you have spent perhaps two weeks! :D It is looking beautiful and i absolutely love your candle sconces....im shopping next week i hope i can find ones as nice as yours.....which i dont think you need to move over. I also think your lamp looks good where it is too as it balances out with the height of the screen on the other side of the sofa. I see you have the ability to sniff out good deals too...gotta love it! :clapping:

Nice improvements in your living room. I especially like the candle sconces and I would not move them out from the mirror. As they are now the sconces and the mirror make a visual single unit that is just the right size to hold its weight over the sofa.

I think your room is coming along fantastically. I really like the sconces that you have selected and pairing them with the mirror has added more presence to that wall. If it's possible, I'd really like a more substantial size pillar candle on your sconces.

Just a quick update everyone. Got my curtains in the mail, they weren't even close to sage green. More like mint green, so they will go back. I went to Pier 1 to look for those curtains, but couldn't find them. I'm pretty set on keeping the corner shelves, but I did try and put the other end table over there and it can't be done with the couch (unlike the when the loveseat was there). I did pick up some candle sconces (buy one get one free at Kohl's). The candles were two different colors, so I am looking for some of those flameless ones mentioned earlier. Also got a floor lamp (at Lowe's), two more throw pillows (also buy one get one free at Kohl's) and a blown glass vase (was $60, marked down to $5 at Art Van Furniture). Anyway, thought I would share the picture. The floor lamp is only there for now, think it will move and I think I'm gonna move the sconces out from the mirror about 3 or 4 inches (a little too close now that I look at them):

and a close up of the vase for Mel to see  :

A very nice job, I really like the mirror above the sofa. I was hestitant to say I didn't like the cubes there especially when no one else was making any comments about them. AS for the unit in the corner it has been suggested to get rid of and I got the felling you like your "mountain bike people" so I don't know if I would get rid of it unless you have another place to highlight them in the room.

Thanks everyone for the comments/opinions. I get a little more excited everytime something else is added to complete the package. I found some wrought iron candle sconces I really like that I might pick up. I'm gonna look into those flameless candles as well, Jeep. I hadn't heard of those before, but it sounds like a good idea with kids and all. :o bigmama, I will be out either tonight or tomorrow night shopping, so I will swing by Pier 1 to see if they still have those curtains. I think they would be the perfect shade of orange ;) And eys, what can I say, I just love your mock ups you render. I thought I had it all worked out, but after seeing that, I might have to go with that plan instead....it just looks sooooo right :applaud:

I love your rug. The whole room is coming along quite nicely. :)

they are called flameless candles, i think they are the greatest thing ever....i have a few of the tealight ones and you cant tell that it isnt a real candle burning....i was just in a store that had the flameless pillar candles but they are real wax just without the real flame....geesh i cant remember where i saw them... :)

i didnt measure my pictures to see where the candle sconce would land beside the picture if i went 66 inches....i must try that jeep.....i remember watching House and Home years back and i do know the sconces shouldnt be right in the centre of the picture, like i would have thought.....they had them down closer to the bottom of the picture of mirror....am i making sense? :p i will draw a picture of what i mean about being closer to the bottom of the picture or mirror....be aware, im no good at this stuff :)

To my eye the mirror looks a couple of inches too high. Maybe it's the angle of the picture but it seems to be just a bit off from being the same height as the top of the screen and I think it might work a bit better if the top of the screen and mirror where the same.

For safety and because they would be more decorative than lighting I would look into the candles that are run off a battery. They were talking about them on Cityline last week and they do look great. Also Brian Gluckstein said wall sconces should be mounted at 66inches from the floor.

Lookin good Scott!!! I would still get rid of the corner shelves, add a blk vase filled with branches to balance the room screen...adding something on either side of the mirror would be a way for u to bring the colour from the area rug onto the wall maybe with some candles in that green colour on your rug.u need another side table with the same lamp on it to once again balance the space.....doin great bud!! :applaud:

I'm taking baby steps, but here are the two latest updates on the living room. 2 throw pillows (I want to get 2 or 3 more in different colors/patterns) and I have my mirror hung up. It is "antiqued", where the it was painted gold, then black, then lightly rubbed before the black was dry. Looks really good up close cause of the "goosebumps" all over it. Not sure I am happy with it, though. The wall looks really plain. Also, I question whether I mounted it too high or not.

Opinions?

Drapes to the floor to make your windows seem bigger. No valance, stay away from them, stay away.
I like the green colour more than the orange. The orange is bringing out the orange in the wood of your couch.
Are you planning on replacing the little blocks on the wall behind the couch for a big mirror or artwork?

Curtains to the floor!

i did a little photoshop work at lunch to get an idea of which color curtains (at least the solid color ones). it's sorta quick and crude, but it gives you and idea. btw, should the curtains run to the floor or to the bottom of the window?

Glad to see that curtain topper go - was too frilly for a solid room. That corner unit is unique to anything I've seen - good for you for using the displays sparingly and with things that are significant to you. Can't see your dust.

I see your dog loves having his picture taken, sorta like a cookie might be coming after you finish with all the flashing. :)

hehehe....he seems to love how soft and cushy that rug is and plops himself down there quite a bit.

as far as the stuff on the shelves, that will probably change, except for the mountain bike artwork. ;)

reginagirl: here is a closeup of the corner shelf. i can't remember where we got it, but it seems like it was about $80 U.S. ignore the dust on this pic too....you would think i would get around to doing some cleaning:D also, the little kokopelli mountain biking artwork is something i just bought recently as well.
