first time spring urns

Hi there,

We recently moved into a new sub division and have no grass or garden, just mud. I have black urns that I would love to fill but I don't know with what type of flower. This is my first attempt at gardening so any help is great. Do I put potting soil in the urns, right now the plants from the winter season only have the styrofoam in it. There is alot of light during the day and some wind right now. The weather has been mixed the past few weeks in ontario so what would be a hardy plant I guess until summer. Would tulips be ok. Our exterior is a dark taupe on the green side of the scale with bright red door. Any help much appreciated. Happy gardening:)

In the summer, I usually place a pot in the urn and then fill in the potting soil. You could do this now with tulips and ivy and then take the tulip bulbs out when you want to put more flowers in for the summer. You would have to cut off the flowers once they bloomed and let the leaves turn brown before taking the bulbs out - I'm pretty sure - I don't have much luck with bulbs, though.

For now I just went to the depot and got one of their flower bowls and plunked it right in the urn. They are pretty pansy-ish purple/yellow flowers. They will do for now until I do the summer thing.

Have fun - I loved my urn last summer.

2 weeks ago I stuffed mine with purple and yellow pansies and stuck a big bunch of pussywillows in the centre - it looks great. I also have hyacyniths in a smaller urn and it's doing well too.

primulas are great. they are a spring flower that flowers very well. and it's a perennial! it'd look great with some ivy in a container. they add a nice burst of colour this time of year :)
