Yup, the idea of a grey kitchen is brewing away. Already got the charcoal counter tops (cabinet boxes too) so it wouldn't be difficult to make the shift. If Jenjen won't go to Witches Brew; well someone's gotta represent! :-)
Meredith, the beech floor was all of $.93/sq' -- and it's floating. Snaps in, and if need be, snaps out! Let me think, what colour floor goes best with grey? Black, industrial stainless, charcoal, other? Gotta think about it.

I'm rarely at a loss for words.... Good LUCK!
I'm just trying to catch up to you in posts :-)
go to bed.
Dreamer. Lots of threads start on one topic and end up wandering all over the place. Doesn't bother me at all. It's kinda the way real life conversations go.
That is beautiful! And not rustic in the least! I have been thinking about slate for a long time, because I think it will look good with dark hardwood, and I like the idea of the different tones (good hiding potential - 2 dogs, 2.5 kids - if you know what I mean). I wish I had less Christmas shopping to do, now I am all excited about flooring!
MikeD - my most profuse apologies. I did not mean to hijack your thread so completely. Maybe you want to start one called "MikeD's kitchen and ONLY MikeD's kitchen"? Or is there some penance you wish of me?
is this still about you?
anyhoo dreamer, i love the feel of your kitchen as i too wanted to paint my cabinets grey but it was squashed by dh. so mine are remaining maple and i have honed finish black slate tiles as countertops and backsplash in a subway pattern. i think slate would look awesome with your cabinets and not neccessarily rustic as RH has already mentioned.
there are so many colour varieties of slate and each piece can be different if you go with multi colour slate. which is quite beautiful. either way i think slate would be really nice. for warmth on your tootsies splurge on in floor heating...highly recommended for cold floors like slate.
i found a picture of multi colour slate in a subway pattern just to give you an idea:
I am sorely tempted - especially by the acid green accent wall! Poor DP has barely recovered from the orange accent walls - I wonder how he would do with acid green? He rather likes my acid green jacket, and I bought a ruffly shirt in acid green & teal. I suppose if I wear a lot of acid green, he may become used to it? Do they sell acid green lingerie?
I love the idea of glass backsplashes too - then I can have my flatest of flat paint and he can scrub to his heart's delight. That would be SO gratifying for him!
As soon as I get the chance to scope the slate, I shall. What is the size of tiles that you have in mind?
of course it will... I wouldn't have dared suggest otherwise unless I was confident.
Your European cabinets need a refresher when it comes to hardware. As your designer I would also suggest that you paint the base cabinets a deep stone and then work with your uppers as lighter. I think the current accent wall should be replaced with an accent colour of ACID GREEN - Anise Garden to be specific from Paint Cafe. I have sent you a pic before of a client's accent wall painted in that colour - the one with the matching Acid Green Dupioni Silk Curtains. I would repost but my Iphoto does not want to cooperate with me this evening.
I think a fabulous retro wallpaper to match would be in order for your backsplash - I have a terrific gray and white one sitting on my desk that would fit the bill. You would then have a piece of glass cut to go over top of it - because I know DP will want to scrub the heck out of it. The remaining wall colour could be in a shade of gray as well... depending on what else is going on.
I'm sure the wallpaper comes in a matching fabric and an UPHOLSTERED VALANCE could be created for your windows. THIS IS NOT DRAPERY.
We will then accessorize the tops of your cupboards with White Ceramic Jonathan Adler Vases - vintage of course.
I think that deserves another box of Bernie yes?
Actually the nordic look is linoleum. Very big in the 50-60's, HUUUGE in fact, never really left. Don't believe everything you see on the Internet!
Subway tiles in slate sound very cool, as long as you will swear on a box of Callebaut that it will look OK with my "European Cabinets" - otherwise, marmoleum is still leading the race.
Don't bring up the Gin... according to my gramma.. it's a (particular undergarment) remover.
that sounds really cool.
I remember those olives! I recommend them with gin!
Dark Charcoal/Black slate is as contemporary as they come. To be fashion forward, have the tiles done in 18" x 24" or 16" x 24" and then laid in a subway fashion on the floor.
I could fling olives a la Elise if you prefer Mr. D.
on recommending colours. Red keeps slapping me down :-)
O.k., what you say or maybe a darker grey.
I am pretty sure slate is too rustic, sadly. I am liking the marmoleum idea quite a bit, and definitely ceramic tile is in the running. But what colour? I would like a nice milk or bittersweet chocolate, I think.
if slate is too rustic (and it probably is), and DP won't have hardwood in the kitchen (to bad because that's the nordic look -- as long as it's maple or beech), how about a solidly coloured, texture-free ceramic tile in the appropriate colour of your choice.
How about a gallery on the Photo Gallery? You are not "soliciting" just responding to my polite request (I am willing to resort to begging, too). I DO remember your fifties style paintings and am now ESPECIALLY eager to see them - I remember you once posted a picture of your studio.
I am a big fan of the pulp fiction style - my daughter has two "B Movie" movie posters in her bedroom and I love them. I also love abstract art and figure drawings...
I know I am not the only one who will be thrilled to see your work. Pretty please?
too funny,
I was thinking after I sent that, that indeed I think it is called,
marmoleum...
I agree, your home lends itself to that!...I really like the simplicity of your cabinets..and although I do like slate tiles...I'm just not sure they wouldn't look, for lack of a better word, too heavy....
I have seen some examples (only on TV), but apparently it is becoming quite popular not only commercially, but residental as well......
I'm thinking of trying to set something up with my paintings....never know what is acceptable here, ya know?...
I'm branching out a bit...was doing a lot of pulp fiction art, now into some abstract..thanks for remembering Dreamer.......
we're pretty good at hijcacking a post, eh.....!
You and I are on a short list together - fans of the 1970s!
Do you mean the lino that looks sort of like terrazo floors? I have seen that, maybe it is called marmoleum? It is an excellent idea for my home - thank you for that! Now I want to set Christmas shopping aside and run to Rona!
The art was not done by my DP, nor is it original but "glicee" prints. I still love it!
Would you consider posting any of your art? I have a vague recollection dancing around the edge of my consciousness that says "obella does stylized figures" - am I even close?
have you checked into any of those new linoleums?....(please know I don't mean the patterned rubbish from the past)
apparently there is loads to choose from, and apparently easy to install....or for someone else to intstall.........
very durable...
I love 70's style homes, ranch style..sunken living rooms and the like...
I am a painter is your DP?...if not, great gift...original art!
My partner will not tolerate hardwood in the kitchen. I hate it that he has opinions of his own! The kitchen is not large but gets a ton of light, south west exposure. Do you think slate is too rustic for these cabinets? If so, what else will work? I have 70's modern architecture to work with, which I love, and want to be true to the era, so black and white will not work.
The art is my birthday present - I love it too! I will give your compliments to DP, who sometimes has opinions of which I highly approve!
I love the idea of dark hardwood.
little confused.......is your kitchen large?...can you start by doing the hardwood in your kitchen and then when the time comes continue in other rooms?
or I also love black & white tiles in a kitchen...not sure how long term/short term you want..??
love your artwork..........
the ceiling fixtures are extremely funky track lighting. You may have forgotten, but these lights were installed shortly after I joined the forum and I love them. They look like tiny stainless set lights, or something that belongs in a dentists office.
Anyway, I am really just looking for suggestions about the floor. I will start a new thread though, as I did not mean to hijack Mike's!
Mike, I liked the chocolate kitchen, but a dark elegant grey will be wonderful too. I think dark grey and beech will look great together - I am obviously a fan of the brown and grey combination.
I appreciate your good intentioned remarks, however on the advice of others I have recently removed all items formerly situated on top of my cabinets. As for the mouldings, in realtors terms these cupboards are elevated to "European Style" and the unadorned lines considered an asset by afficionados of that style. In fact, my plan for renovation is to have the cupboards refaced with doors in exactly the same style but in a dark wood with little grain, al la Scandanavia. At least I think it is Scandanavian - Aan? Jem? Meredith? Opinions?
I added to the top cabs and it made a big difference, just got away from the boxy and looked more finished to me... Mind you what is up there is probably hanging in dust about now...well I am always rearranging, so next time they will get dusted off...:)
at mocks up at all but what would you think of some moulding on top, it would cwertainly give them some height...and add some colourful items on top similar to the colurs in the art on the wall to the left...and maybe change out the ceiling fixure later when you redo in the future... :)
to my Design Knee Capping List... Jen's DH is heading it at the moment. I have my Design Hit Men and their Violin Cases at the ready should your friends try to intervene in your Re-Styling of your soon to be fabulous kitchen.
Sometimes pictures are TOO revealing. That ugly yellowing microwave really MUST go. I wonder if DP wants a new microwave for Christmas?
Such as it is. The floor is white ceramic tile with black grout - HATE IT! What do I replace it with, though, since the long range plan is for dark hardwood elsewhere and the long, long range plan is for wood cabinets. What goes with it now and then???
Oh, and for you critter haters, I will have you know I removed my beloved Portugese roosters. It was hard for me, too.
Who lives in this house YOU or THEM.... and who has more decor support .. YOU or THEM... Grey Flannel Mens Suiting would make anyone woman swoon, esp. if Redwine is served! So, HA to them... and start to paint and get posting ... some of us are waiting! And as a complete aside... got a Wine Wish List Yet... I need suggestions :D
