Floating mirror

I just found this great mirror! Its quite large (60 in by 45 in) with a thick frame (10 in) that has a strong textured braided look on the frame. My DR dilemma is I don't have enough room for a sideboard. There is only 36 in between the table and the wall in the DR area. I drew on the picture where the mirror would go but I'm wondering if it looks like its "floating" on the wall because there is nothing there to ground it. What do you think? What other options do I have for this wall?

One last thing about this... the poor bugger who sits in front of said shelf will always be banging into it. The floating shelf would work well in a traffic zone area, but from the looks of it, you don't have 24"between the pulled out chair and the shelf itself.. which would be the bare minimum needed.

Of course I will take heed of the Red... no use in putting off the Red Kharmic Gods at this time!

Pottery Barn sells floating shelves which you may want to look at if you consider the horizontal mirror. You may be able to see them on the internet site but I haven't looked so I'm not sure.

My only request is that the colours I choose go with the colour red..its my favourite accent colour..I'm sure you can understand :) :)

the mirror would need something underneath it there... can't really explain it better than that!

I think the long mirror will add drama and be a great focal point when you walk in to the room. It also repeats the opening of the doorway on the other side which will fool the eye into thinking the space is much more open than it currently is..

I'll look at your colour suggestions after I finish this quote I am supposed to be working on.

in the horizontal orientation does look like it's floating but you raise a good question -- do you need a shelf to anchor it?

Could be part of the reason it looks like it's floating is the expanse of white wall -- would a more substantial colour on the wall help?

Another idea that comes to mind is to use a slightly smaller mirror (but still with a nice chunky frame) and put a fairly weighty sconce on either side of it (doesn't have to be wired, could be just candle sconces, perhaps with some sparkle to tie into the chandelier).... whaddya think?

From what I am reading you need a shelf or table to anchor a mirror even if it is above (behind) the DR table. I don't have room for either and sure not room for a leaning mirror but I wanted to put one above my DR table. Is it going to look funny or won't the DR table anchor it? Yikes glad this thread started because I thought I was ok.

that is a hard choice as i like both looks, one adds height and one adds width...to me color is personal, and must be something that you can live with and really love, regardless of who picks it...what about having the person your working with....can he or she come up with some colors that you will love...after all you are the one that has to live with it...not her or him lol by the way your rooms are beautiful and i can imagine myself there if my children were grown lol good luck finding the paint you need and making the decision on your mirrors

Jalan, I love your space! I love your dining room....wahh! Someday, when my kiddies are gone maybe.....I like all the colors someone picked for you. Ask Red what she thinks.

Picking colours is so hard! I'm working with someone on it but quite frankly I don't like her choices. Shes looking at BM Sisal for the main spaces (hallway, LR, DR), BM Tiramisu for the kitchen (cherry stained maple cabinets), possibly Buckhorn for the adjoining family room. So far I'm only liking Tiramisu, but then again I'm not very good with colour. Any suggestions??

the floor mirror suggestion that is, and thanks for the pic of the chandelier - it adds a touch of elegance and sparkle - sort of an old world feel to a thoroughly modern room.

Very elegant! I like the idea of a mirror if only to reflect that spectacular chandeliar! What colours are you considering?

it will look very nice like that...you'll benefit from the reflection of the chandelier as well...sparkly!! hope you find one.

orientated horizontally I think that it works better with the shape of your wall

Good luck and have fun!

Go for a leaning floor mirror - very tall.. I would go for a rustic, dark stained frame to create some tension with the contemporary pieces in the room.

Hardware - the store, Murray and Jordan are the owners make delicious mirrors.. they use refurbished moulding and such to do these. Commute on Queen ST. West also makes similar. Go for a size just below your ceiling height!

That will give you some serious WOW factor!

Make sure it's at least 36" wide.

RedHeron, thanks for the suggestions!! I'm going to visit these guys. I never quite thought of a floor mirror in this spot before.

yes, I'm in the process of picking paint colours, drapery/pillow fabrics and installing hardwood floors. I saw your shelf when you posted the pics and thought it was a great idea! I don't need storage, I just want to do what looks best visually. I'm going to look at the suggestion of a leaning floor mirror and visit RedHerons suggestions to see what they have. I had never quite thought of a floor mirror in this spot before.

Yes, I LOVE that Barbara Barry look and this was the closet I could get.

love your room and the furniture you have. were you thinking of adding colour to the walls or at least to the one dining wall? right now there is nothing to stop the eye so a focal on that wall is needed for sure. i love mirrors in dining rooms too ...do you need the storage however that shelving can provide? the combo of the two sounds like it may work. i had the same dilemma in that i didn't have enough room for a sideboard so i opted for a shelf with storage. then i could display vases and store table linens etc there. i also added a strong colour for some wow. just some ideas.
are those dining chairs Barbara Barry design? love them!

Treat it as a large painting that you would put on the wall. The floating issue doesn't bother my eye in the least. It looks great to me!!!

...but I would lower the frame down as far as possible...lower than you've shown.

chandelier. Do you have a close up pic of it?
What a nice room.
I agree, a floating shelf underneath would anchor it.
Could you draw a pic of the mirror leaning against the wall from the floor? Do you think it would be too low?

so is the consensus that it does look like its floating? I thought the mirror was substantial enough so this might not be the case. I think 5 ft is too short to lean it against the wall.

A colour block is a great idea but not sure if it would work for this room as the wall extends into another room.

A floating shelf, hmmm... the only one I've seen is at IKEA. Not sure if it will work with this particular mirror, but maybe a shelf and choose another mirror...?

I've been looking for a narrow console table for ages and can't quite find the right one. I would love one with some curvy legs or something...

Jem007, this is the closest closeup I have right now of the chandalier. thanks,

if you're going to lean the mirror, you will need a taller mirror.

....an ottoman on the bottom of the mirror? That way if anyone misbehaves or throws food at the table, they can sit on the ottoman for a little time out!!!

I was thinking the same thing. What about a floating shelf under the mirror? that would anchor it and you could add a couple of nice vases or something on it.

a colour block on the wall to anchor the mirror?

Or any chance you could fit in a narrow console-style table, or a wall-hung shelf under the mirror?

What about leaning the mirror against the wall , the other way around. So that you have the 5 foot height. I have done that in my dining room!
