flowers you remember meeting in childhood

Which flowers do you remember seeing first when you were a child, flowers that made an impression?

I can name a few. First there were mom's carnations, "pinks" as she called them. They were the only flower she grew in the garden, a pale pink version with a wonderful fragrance. She was not much of a gardener, but she loved keeping a big bunch of these growing for the fragrance. Lots of Foxglove and Bluebells grew wild along the side of ditches, and I recall taking great chances to reach them so I could pick a few stems. Lastly, there are two neighbours I remember by the flowers that most impressed me in their garden. On one side I discovered snapdragons, and on the other I found the most wonderful dark blue/purple iris. That iris had the most wonderful fragrance in the heat of summer. It was not the large bearded type, but another variety.

I haven't had time to do any planning. I did get out and decide what to keep and what to toss. I have many ideas, but nothing on paper.Hopefully next week I'll be settled in, then I can plan the gardens!! I'm sure I'll be on here a lot when the time comes.

how are the garden plans coming Amy? Have you designed any flowerbeds yet or is it still a tad too cold?

My bedroom window faced our huge backyard that had lilacs all along the fence line. I can still remember sitting in front of the window with the sun streaming in and smelling the lilacs that wafted into my room. A wonderful memory from childhood that I didn't realize the beauty of it until this post.

my nana's gardens. She always has climbing roses up trellises on the front of her house, some of them are really old. She's also had peonies for as long as I remember. Now that I have my own gardens, I plan on having the same and more.

I think it was the names, more than the flowers themselves that stuck in my memory! Snapdragons are pretty mind-blowing to little kids though if someone shows how they "snap"!

They were extremely popular in Europe where I grew up. I remember all the windows had boxes full of them, mostly semi-pendent, glowing red. We always took them inside befor the first frost for overwintering.
