MY dd has a no lawn backyard townhouse in Calgary, yet the area is large enough for a small table, umbrella and chairs (for that coffee in the morning or drink in the evening). Lovely pots with flowers (and we do need more info for this), if you are not a flower girl or no green thumb think about low maintenance or greenery. (I like the idea of a water feature). Do you want to cook outdoors??? do you want to lounge?? The new outdoor patio carpets can add an additional room. :D
Hi Leese...Welcome to the forum....What about a water feature?....I have a small one in our back yard and it adds interest & the sound of the water is very soothing...I have posted a picture of it...If you could post a picture of your yard that would help us to help you. :) Enjoy your project ...you cannot go to wrong when it comes to gardening...as long as it grows it will be beautiful :)
Where do you live? Is the garden area sunny? shady? If no lawn, what is groundcover? concrete? flagstone? pea gravel? dirt?
These issues are important when choosing plants. Also you need to decide whether you want trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals? What colour scheme you want? What look do you want? Formal? Informal? mediterranean?
My preference is to go with perennials plus some trees and try to stagger their bloom time so there is always colour. I also prefer low maintenance and drought tolerant plantings which reduces my work and saves water.
Enjoy the planning.
