oh no...they're attacking from all sides!!!!!.....LOL
yOU HANDLED THAT WRONG. I am as English as they come, I only used that because of the time I spent there during hogmanay.
philb, it's an invasion  lol

Glaswegian - I assumed from your handle that you were from Glasgow.
its rather interesting to hear about how people live in other countries
smiles
janetc
i'm so smart!!!!...LOL... :D
You guessed right :)
Aye Aye....there are londoners, and there are those that like to think they are londoners, know what I mean? :D As a born and bred londoner, I can't help but love it to bits. I know my way from point A to B, and know where to get the best deals and the dodgy ones that come off the back of a van
Don't get me wrong though, I like a few places up norf and in between. My parents actually live in Kent now, which is just outside london.
The Watford gap is south of Oxford, north of London I think - forgive me for not checking the second map posted.
I personally like a lot of areas in the UK, and one of my least favourite places is London itself; it's nice to visit on occasion, but that's where my interests stop. I guess it is a big tourist thing for those not used to the British "way".
Phil....i'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and guess that you're an englishman too.... :)
Haha glaswegian, especially if we consider Hadrians wall, that being the England/Scotland border it's a little further north than I had meant ;)

Hmmmm.....we all? We will have to understand what they are trying to say first, ala Alex Ferguson ( Manchester united manager ) :D
ps - I'm not biased, am I ???
oh boy did i open up a can of worms here....LOL
that the people from the northern half (above Hadrian's wall, say) are the better half, by far lol !!!!! :D
ps - I'm not biased, am I ???
A clearer map

Anyone north of the Watford gap (just north of the greater London area) I believe is to be called a Northerner. There's a great rivallry between the two areas for many reasons, like the south getting a great deal more attention on the national news (BBC1, etc.) - it's somewhat silly in a way, but it's just the way of things there. :)
Football ( soccer ), plays a big part in this rivalry, the major cause. ;) The map in the link below

There is a north - south divide in the UK
I have always wondered what this means, what is considered the north compared to south and why the rivalry.
Thanks for any info.

Great innit? Don't forget corrie as well ;)
from washers and bar fridges to politics....
Hmmmmm...that will be the same breed of people here that vote in the Liberals, only for them to run the country down with their shenanigans like corruption scandals and imaginary contracts to firms that contribute to their election campaign.
Anyhoo...in the UK, when new laws gets passed in the house of commons, it then has to go to the house of lords for the last say, so you can see why these things happen in regards to customs and history.
As regards to "doing things according to custom and history and most people like it that way" Knowing quite a few Brits, I would say it was more from stubborness and unwillingness to change than history.! :D
First as a londoner, I hate corrie with a passion, so do most Londoners. You will find that when you go to London, most people don't really care for most things that come out of Manchester, Manchester United football club, being the biggest thing out of there
For Londoners, it's the soap called EASTENDERS, rather than corrie. There is a north - south divide in the UK, even though most people tend to want to ignore it. It's a healthy rivalry though :)
Don't forget we have brick houses, rather than drywall like most houses here, and a lot of houses are LISTED, meaning you can't make changes or adjustments to them.
I also watch the show with the Scottish boys, "how not to decorate", and the reason why they were going raving mad about the fridge, is because it's a RETRO fridge, and they are damn good and expensive. Check the link below

A country as old as England, most things are done with regards to customs and history, and most people like it that way.
God save the queen ;)
About fridges; On How Not to Decorate last night they were ranting and raving about this giant 'industrial sized' fridge in the person's home. You'd think they parked a truck in the kitchen the way those boys were going on and on about it and how it took over the kitchen. Here is was merely the same sized fridge we would consider standard fair.
It really makes you think of what consumers we have become when you have an older house. My first house (a bungalow) had no clothes closets at all on the main floor and you could see the outlines on the floor of the originals. They were deep enough for a hanger and maybe 16" wide. Just enough room for Sunday clothes and maybe a couple of other pieces.
I don't know how people did it when I think of the 900 sq' house my dad and his 7 siblings grew up in but it does make me wonder why we have to be so overhoused now when land is so hard to get in most cities.
Most doors in the UK open inwards, toward the house - this goes for stores as well - I've often wondered why our stores here in Toronto open out to the street - anyone else been hit or close-called by a door just by walking on the sidewalk? ;)
As for Corrie itself, I can't recall the door furnishings, but it could just be a TV thing - there's usually at least a door number, handle and letterbox on a typical UK door. Though I hate Corrie itself, I've walked down that road when the studios were still allowing it. I even saw Curly Watts pull-up and wander down the street in front of me when I was visiting Manchester :)
A lot of fridges also have freezers in them, or are split level with a freezer on the bottom - just narrower/smaller than the huge appliances over this way.
Yay, another Corrie fan. I have never noticed their door hardware...guess I'll be watching more closely tonight (I'm still trying to figure out what bacon butties are exactly). I have to laugh at B.Gluckstien who is a huge Corrie fan and says he'd love to go redecorate their homes. What a hoot that would be to have them work that into a story line and have him fight with Vera about the exterior of the house.

I would think too because there isn't many places that have basements, or a surplus of closets either.
I live in a 140yr. old stone home, and it is brutal. No garage, no basement, a tiny attic and one closet.
We did remove one other closet that was in the second bedroom and bought a huge PAX wardrobe from Ikea.
I guess they just didn't accumulate like we have a habit to do nowadays.
We put up a wall in our back room with sliding doors to hide the apt. size washer/dryer,laundry sink,
the furnace and hot water tank....
it sure is tight, but what can you do??...just purge a lot.
I too have a question regarding front doors in England, I watch a lot of Coronation St. (i LOVE it by the way and cant' miss one epsoide!) and i noticed that i don't always see a door handle on the front door of their house's, ? How do they open their doors?
When my DS went to play hockey in Germany that was the thing he couldn't get over that they shop everyday and had only little bar fridges. The first day he got there he went shopping and they didn't even have carts just baskets and you had to take your own bag. He was a little taken back with that one but soon got used to it. He didn't have a freezer so evrything was fresh.
I had a fridge/freezer in my condo, so did my parents and everybody else that I know. The older houses don't have much room, hence the reason for the small fridge, and yes people shop every week for groceries at ASDA and TESCO
or do you go shopping everyday for what you need??...that would drive me insane
interesting....i couldn't live with that but interesting none-the-less...i've also never noticed freezers??....where do you put all your food that needs to be refridgerated??...and frozen stuff??
