Well, I've got a cheap Braun with whirly blades that has been going strong for years and doesn't make my coffee taste bitter (I'd notice, because I hate bitter coffee).

I bought a de Longhi burr grinder for about $70 from CT.

I have a Cuisinart (burr) grinder & highly recommend it...I have had it for quite a few yrs. now without any problems:)

To narrow the search down, purchase a good 'burr' grinder and not one with the whirly blades. The blade style generates heat from friction when grinding and will burn the oils in the coffee bean creating a bitter taste. The burr grinder adjusts to how fine you prefer and does it on one pass creating no heat. Beyond that I think your looking for a reputable manufacture.
