This is valuable info, even if some are just rumours. However you just never know with todays economy. I think i will stick to the mall cards, at least there is a variety of businesses.
thank you

here's an email I just received from Eddie Bauer

To our valued customers:

It has come to our attention that misleading information is circulating via email as part of a hoax intended to discourage consumers from buying gift cards from a number of retailers including Eddie Bauer. We want to set the record straight.

Eddie Bauer has been in business since 1920 and operates 376 retail stores throughout North America. We also have a robust online and catalog division. In our March 2008 annual report, we announced both the opening of new locations as well as the closing of some older locations as part of our normal course of business. The stores referenced were all closed in January 2008. In 2009, we will again open and close a handful of stores as part of our normal business plan.

Eddie Bauer remains committed to providing our customers with outstanding quality, value and service, now and for many years to come. Our gift cards are a great option for the holidays. You can purchase and redeem them at any of our retail stores, through our catalogs or at eddiebauer.com. We look forward to serving you this holiday season.

I'd avoid Amercian Express right now...they aren't doing so well.
CAA has a card you can load with cash.

The other option is also a preloaded credit card you can get them from american Express and I believe form Visa as well.

Why not give a bank draft or money order? Depending on the type of account you have there may not be a bank service fee. You know that the money has been taken from the account and the person getting it can do whatever they want. You could put in a note &/or a picture of what they might want to use the money for.

that's what I wondered because when stores are going under they don't usually make it known until it happens (otherwise they can have all sorts of trouble like working with the receivers, creditors, etc.). Sometimes you can find speculation on some companies but you never know when they will pull a rabbit out of their hat and be restructured or purchased etc.

I was speaking with someone who does a lot of gift cards (part of her customer appreciation) and she mentioned she usually buys 'mall' gift cards. That seems like a great solution (if someone is local to that mall) when it comes to worry about closings or just what tastes people have.

So I went to check the internet for this news, just in case it was another urban legend. It seems to be a mix of real and not so exact news. Some of the companies are not closing that many stores, however I still think the main thing is that with the current economic situation, cards are not the best Xmas gift.

JJill seems to keep some stores so the online one should be alive as well.

Imagine all the people losing jobs ... even here started hitting close to home. I have two friends who were let go and another who barely escaped from it.

I buy some J Jill stuff too...Inglewood, you're maybe like me and do a few runs cross border to Walden Galleria. Looks like I'll have to get in some shopping soon at J Jill and Ann Taylor.

It's scary that so many stores are closing!!

Have no idea, Inglewood, but if they are closing all their stores, they're probably going under...
