My DH's cousin and best friend has just been told he has Guillian Barre Syndrome and is hospital in Victoria. He got sick over the weekend and went to the DR on Monday and they told him that is what they suspect he has I have done some looking up on the internet and it sounds bad. Has anyone ever heard of this and what it is like DH is very upset.

My girlfriend has been diagnosed with this condition. It has affected one of her arms. She becomes very weak and is unable to lift things or hold onto items. She has to leave her job for months on end and eventually it seems to let up and she returns to work. Other than this weakness she appears to be in good health.

I don't know why one got sick sooner yeh dH is happy to pass on that one. The only thing we know is the second guy to get sick is sicker than the first and i think he just may have not gone to the Dr as soon and it got really bad before he went. Also he is a realy big guy and the other is much smaller so maybe it took longer to affect him. He said he went away for a few weeks and really didn't feel good the whole time he was gone.

Holy cow. So they think they may have caught it at the same time then? Any idea why one was ill so much sooner? It really does make you want to make sure things are well cooked when you hear of things like this.

I hope both guys are on their way to recovery and I bet your hubby is glad he passed on that turkey.

Just an update on this DH's cousin who has been hit with this syndrome has started to recover but still not back on his stable feet has some balance issue and gets very tired. Today DH called a friend that he and his cousin were visiting just before he got sick to find his friend answering his phone in the hospital. He has been in for a week and is also paralyzed and hasn't moved anything in a week. Today was the first day he was able to answer his phone and even a couple of days he couldn't open his eyes. They haven't proven it is the same thing as DH's cousin has but are checking it out. DH said while he they visiting a lady brought over a home smoked turkey breast and DH wouldn't eat it he thought it looked raw but the others ate it. He is sure that is where they got sick from. So just a huge reminder make sure the turkey is well cooked don't take a chance it can be very serious.

It's really interesting how things can get us. My mom was absolutely diligent about cooking and handling foods because of worry about what might be in it and yet there are people who regularly eat things rare or raw and don't seem bothered. I've heard that most of us have a form of food poisoning on a regular basis and think it's stomach flu or some other problem vs what it really is.

Years ago one of my parent's friends ended up in terrible shape, in a wheel chair because he could no longer walk and this went on for a couple of years. they couldn't figure out what it was but every time he was in the hospital he improved and when he went home he got worse. Turned out it was the coloured TP at home and once it was gone he returned to normal health. It wasn't long after than coloured TP went out of favour which makes me wonder how many other people might have reacted.

I was watching jTLC last night Mystery Diagnoses and the case was bout exactly this illness. The man in this case was very sick and he was off work for a year and was in a wheel chair. They claim it is from undercooked chicken or poultry as they carry the Campylobacter Bacteria and that is what causes it. DH was very sick about 25 years ago with the same bacteria from drinking the lake water and not boiling it enough he didn't get Guillian Barre but he was off work for 6 months with severe diarrhea. So everyone be sure to cook any poultry really well.

We just got an email from his wife and she said because their Dr caught it right away he is doing fine and will be coming home tomorrow. I guess it is like a lot of things early treatment for it means less chance of it getting really bad. His feet and arms are still really weak but he can walk and he must tell her right away if any small changes happen then they can treat it again quickly. We are so thankful that he got in and will be able to go home. I had never heard of this before but I hear it is not really common but not terribly uncommon either.

my niece had this illness when she was about 12 years old, and in her case she did not have it severe, she had difficulty walking, but the hospital for sick kids kept an eye on it. For some the symptons never do get worse and in her case the illness did subside and she is now a healthy 17 year old. I hope for the best for you Dh's cousin. How is he doing now jeep?
