I coloured my hair yesterday from a summer blonde to a red. It is non-permanent, Natural Instincts, washes out in 28 washes, thankfully...but the colour is very RED. Halloween RED, clown RED, crazy RED. The parts of my hair that were bleached blonde by the sun is really BRIGHT!
This morning taking the kids to school, I was so embarrassed, I had to leave, and let them walk the rest of the way to their line up. The moms and kids were just staring at me! And now the school has just called, and asked me to come in at both recesses to help out at lunch time. omg, I don't like all the attention.
What can I do to tone this colour? If I wash it 28 times in one day will it go away? lol

Well ! You have brought some excitement into people's lives! As long as they are talking about your hair, they are leaving everybody else alone. :) I'll bet a lot of them don't have hair as nice as yours. I think it looks great!
Cat...Your hair is stunning....My sister's natural colour is exactly the same shade & everyone is envious of her hair :)
Well, today it is the same. Most people saw it yesterday, and all commented on it, saying 'it looks great or funky, or you go girl!' I preferred it when people did comment on it, because then I could explain, and laugh about it. But the people who didn't say anything were worse, just staring and my mind is thinking they're saying to themselves 'wow, bad hair job'.
My friend got the award for best reaction. She was so shocked, her mouth wide open, and I think she stopped breathing for a few seconds. She said 'so your parents left this weekend, didn't they?' implying I had nothing to do, now that my parents month long visit had finished. lol
A guy near her said my hair is the same as the fall tree behind me, yip, full on fall glow!
My sons think it is hilarious. On the way to school they were giggling and asking if I was coming all the way to school today or was I going to run home again. I said I was going to be brave. One said 'Mom, your hair is still crazy today', the other said 'Mom, when you come outside your hair glows'. I bravely stood there with all the other moms looking, and tried not to shrink inside.
Other kids on the playground mostly did a double take, some commented like 'you dyed your hair', 'is that for halloween?', or one said' did you notice your hair is red?' I replied 'I think I would have noticed this crazy colour, don't you?'
Oh, well, another week, and hopefully it would have toned down. The colour is much brighter than in the photo, lol Totally screaming FAKE.
I might not do red again in the future, even though I have done it many times in the past. The thing is I never remember what brand or shade I used, just look at price, and the colours and models on the boxes are always changing.
As for what products I use on my hair, I would say regular cutting at the hairdresser is the no.1 reason for healthy hair. I just use whatever shampoo and conditioner looks interesting on the shelf. Not the cheapest brand like Alberto (hair like straw), more middle priced.
Cat - how do you feel about your hair today?
Agree. Perhaps stay away from pink tone shades. (clothes/make up)
Ilove it. I just think it is a huge change for you. I have to agree ..change up your makeup. I have hairdressers friends who change their hair color all the time but they all say they have to be picky with clothes color and makeup when they go red. They always look fab!!
I think it looks strikingly beautiful! Maybe it is just more shocking to you and those you know from goig blond to red. It looks amazing!
I walked into my sons class at lunch and said 'I am A's mom, and I have crazy hair, so sit down and eat your food' lol Needless to say they all smiled and started jumping around
Oh my! I had to giggle over this one!
From the pictures on my monitor, your hair colour is gorgeous. I think going from blonde to rich red would be shocking. I have quite dark hair and if I went to blonde, I'm sure I'd feel quite self-conscience, too!
I imagine that anyone looking at you is most likely admiring your new do! I say enjoy it and strut your stuff, sister!
It looks like a nice red on my monitor too Cat but I have to admit, if you are really finding you can't live with it, do the easy out and head to a drug store that has some beauticians on staff. They can either suggest how you need to adjust your makeup so it works (and you do have to do that if you change your hair colour or it will never look right) or what colour you could put on top to tone it down to what you like.
I had a big mistake happen one time which I couldn't live with (A.K.A. how I learned not to answer my business line while colouring my hair....bad, it was bad) and just had them recommend another colour and I put it on top the same day and that did the trick. No big damage and I got much closer to what I was hoping for.
I love the colour! Red usually washes out really quickly so I wouldn't bother changing it.
I don't know what your hair was like before, but seeing it for the first time I think it looks like a beautiful, rich auburn. What does the rest of your family think? Are they shocked by the change like you are....or do they see it like the rest of us do......as beautiful?? It might just take some getting used to..... and hopefully by the time you get to like it, it won't be all washed out ;)
Cat - you're making a joke of the change was the best approach. I'm sure everyone is just staring because it is a big change and it's beautiful. It's just a shock to you.
Maybe you should also share your hair care secrets. What products you use.
Please just don't tell us that you use the same black truffle oil shampoo (or whatever that outrageously expensive 3 or 4 digit price tag of a hair product that the beautiful dark hair brunette beauty of an actresss Catherine Zeta Jones uses)
I'm late with my opinion, but your hair colour is lovely!! I've always loved red and red-ish hair... beautiful! I think I'm going to go and buy a hair colour kit... in red!!
I love the colour. Your hair looks so healthy. Enjoy!
Thanks everyone! :biglol: Usually when I colour my hair, no one notices, but today the eyes were wide, lol
I walked into my sons class at lunch and said 'I am A's mom, and I have crazy hair, so sit down and eat your food' lol Needless to say they all smiled and started jumping around
The colour looks fantastic!!
And anyway, who cares what other people think?? If they don't like it, too bad for them!! When I was waiting to have my tooth implant done, I had a big gap right at the front of my mouth where my tooth had been removed. I got to the point where I didn't care if looked like a hillbilly, I was sick of wearing the flipper that filled in the gap and I just went out wherever I needed to go with that big gap showing :D
Live with it for awhile. It does tone down and fades, but I agree with the group, like the colour. Sometimes such a drastic change, just takes time. Shower twice a day, morning and night and it will be fine. Take my word for it, one week and you will be fine, if not sooner.
i think you hair is absolutely awesome, i love the color and i think its like what others said, you just need to get use to not seeing the blonde. I too use Natural Instincts semi permanent, so if you are still disliking it it will wash out naturally and rather quickly, but i still think the color is beautiful.
smiles
janetc
Yep...I still love it too!! And I just wanna say that DANG! Your hair looks soooooo healthy!!!
Third look and I still say its gorgeous. Shiny. Not dull brassy. I am not partial to the shades of red that some women do that borders on the cool tones of purple like eggplant. I much rather have a warmer shade of coppery gold reds.
I agree with other posters. Give it some time. Just as you get used to it and start liking it. The colour will fade.
I just saw your pics & I really like the colour! It looks rich not too bright or brassy! Give yourself a day or 2 to get used to it!
Heres another shot. I have scraped and tied my hair up for the school duty. Poor kindergartens! Here goes, off to school...being brave.
I love it! It's beatiful shade, after the first reation from people I'm sure there will be people who will say they like it better than your old colour. But as said previously change the colour of your make up go more dramatic. you'll look dynamite!!
Gerri
I love it. I would not change it at all. I agree with SamKing.
Cat...I LOVE IT!!!!! For real! Its just that you were used to seeing blonde in the mirror...and now all of a sudden...you're a redhead!! It'll take some time to get used to, but I don't think any emergency trips to the professionals are necessary. Semi-permanent colours are just that...semi permanent. Yes, the bleached areas (from past highlights?) will take the colour a little more intense, and will hold it a little longer than the rest of your hair, but that just adds visual interest. Live with it for a week or so and see how you feel. Then, if need be go to the stylist.
ps...I've been colouring my hair with non-professional colour for 20 years!!! (yes, since I was 12) Haven't seen my natural in forever!! Anyway, the only really bad experience I've had was trying to use a Henna (you gals remember those right?) to make my naturally mousy brown hair turn black. Well...instead it turned a lovely shade of KHAKI GREEN!!!!! Trust me....that was a colour that needed an emergency stylist vsit!!!! This red is awesome!
Took a secon look. Reminds me of the actress Julianne Moore. A very beautiful NATAURAL red head. I saw her recently for a movie with her hair dyed blonde & I thought she looked better as a red head.
The actress on Desperate Housewives = Brie
Her hair is very orangey red but I find her complexion very fair or too pale to carry the strong contrast.
Maybe if you play around with some make up colours that would compliment this new rich shade of hair.
Thinking of Lucille Ball. She was a beauty and at time her hair was quite orange.
My screen/monitor shows your hair as a very beautiful shade of auburn red.
Not brassy. Not at all offensive as you describe. Blondes should go 'redder' for the fall. Seems like a natural choice at this time of year.
Auburn/red heads colour ~dye fade very fast. I think it is the hardest colour/dye to acheive.
Just wear a baseball cap for today.
Wash your hair daily but I wouldn't bother doing it more frequently than that as it will be hard on your hair. You wouldn't want it going brittle and falling off. Red hair is better than no hair IMO.
If it were me I would just laugh about it, SH*T happens and things don't always go according to plan. Hopefully you won't run into too many judgemental people while your hair colour is an off shade. You're still the same person inside regardless of your hair colour.
Call the customer service number on the product packaging and see if they have any other suggestions.
I just saw your photo, it looks beautiful!
Heres a tree outside that looks similar in shade! And a swatch of my hair, lol
