OK

I think we are going to split the difference and do 32-34" whichever suits tall DH and not so tall me!!
Thanks everyone!!!
It used to weird me out when I was able to answer questions like this without thinking, but I'm getting used to it now....according to the national building code it can be 800mm - 965 mm which in inches is 31" - 38"
hope that helps
Building codes have detailed specs on things such as heights of handrails, min. and max. spacing between banisters so kids don't get their heads stuck between them, etc... A quick call to your local municipal permit dept. may be advantageous (do it once, do it right), I'm sure they are used to these types of questions all the time... There are liability issues here too in addition to the safety of your loved ones.
Good luck with your project!
then maybe go 33-34" for the younger ones. If the stairs are slippy may not be a bad idea. Oh np I found the measuring tape fast for a change LOL
The staircase in question is to the basement, so it will be used equally between kids and adults....
I appreciate you taking the time to measure your handrail height for me!
I think it depends on who is using it. all adults or kids and adults. Mine is 36" from top of step to top of hand rail. I think it's pretty standard/
