Hanging a headboard

Hi, I am new on this forum, and I just found heaven lol...I am sure I will learn so many things, I love anything to do with decorating and DIY projects.

My next DIY project is a headboard, I will use fabric, that is the same as my curtains, that is the easy part ! My question is, and it may sound dumb  but HOW do I install the headboard to the wall ? Do I just hang it ? or attach it to the bed ?

Thanks for any suggestions !

Thanks to everyone, lots of helpful hints, and also great ideas from the thread of a few years ago...I looked in the net for more info on French cleats, and also saw a "how to" video on it ...I am a "visual" doer lol...hate reading instructions, but If I see it done, I can do it ! :) I saw how it is made, very easy and simple solution for hanging heavy objects. I think I will go with the French cleats. I am thinking of starting on my headboard project this weekend !

Thanks, I had forgotten, but I did hear about tis method of hanging heavier items, I will look into it further. :) It does sound like a good idea.

If you are concerned about weight I think you have a few options. think of all the ways they hang heavy mirrors or paintings. You could use various fasteners (check out a hardware store) if your studs fall where you need them.

If they don't, what they often do with large pictures/mirrors is to use a strip of wood. Something like a 2X4 but it's cut in the middle lengthwise on an angle. One side gets attached to the studs, the other to the piece and then the two pieces fit back together on the wall (the angles essentially locking them together). I don't know if I explained that very well but there are instructions on the Internet someone found before.

the advantage is you can hang a lot of weight without making a lot of holes in the walls.

Here's a rough drawing of it as it would appear from the side.

True, I do realize it would depend on how heavy it will be, (and that is what I am worried about). My plan is to use plywood, cut to fit a queen size bed. I will use fabric same as my curtains (silk lookalike :) and maybe will frame it with MDF that I will stain or paint, but the framing is still at an idea stage.

A second option would be to go to a secondhand store, flee market, etc.....and try to get an existing headboard that can easily be attached to the bedframe. I would then only have do the upholstoring. The shape of my existing headboard is not the shape I am looking for right now, or I would have used it. I am not into a "set" decorating, I prefer mix and match, I prefer to break up my pieces.

Either would work but your decision may depend more on what you want to do.

There are probably a few ways to hang a headboard depending on how heavy it is. The bed really only goes one way by attaching to a frame.

What type of headboard are you making?
