The 11 year old home we bought has golden oak everywhere; it's on window trim, kitchen cupboards, fireplace, baseboards and stair banisters. There is carpet in the sitting area of the great room and tile in the kitchen area. I will be replacing the carpet in the sitting area with hardwood, but not sure on the best option for colour and grain. I have found a white oak hardwood that is about a shade or two lighter than golden oak. so, I think it contrasts a little, but still blends in. any ideas for me? Here are a couple of pics.
Thanks!

I think the ebony flooring would really set the room off and tie into your fireplace. As Mrs. P. mentioned , painting the window frames would also lessen the wood impact and be good. Lighter flooring would not provide the same pop the dark will and I think you would really like it.
Thanks Mrs P. I hadn't thought about painting the trim. I think that's a great idea, and also thanks for the affirmation on the hardwood!
I would definetly not try and match the oak. Your lighter option sounds like it could work. You could also go dark like ebony which would tie in with the fireplace surround, counter tops, etc. I know you did not ask for this advice but would you consider painting out the trim around the windows and doors. I know I definetly would - it has that 80's look to it and really cuts up the room. Besides, from what I can tell, the trim is not elaborate or very wide/fancy looking so that you would want to highlight it. Don't paint that fireplace or cabinets.
