Hardwood dilemma

We are removing the carpet in our living and dining rooms which are joined together. However the living room area is sunken and the floor in the adjacent hallway is a medium stained red oak. We will never be able to match hardwoods so I was thinking of installing a darker stained red oak in the living and dining area. We will be laying down large area rugs in both rooms leaving about 2 feet in the perimeter exposed. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
