Hardwood floors in Kitchen & Bathroom

Do you think it is a good idea to put hardwood floors in the kitchen and bathrooms? Is it practical?

Thanks,

I have hardwood floors (oak with medium brown stain) throughout my home.
I absolutely love them! They are easy to maintain and clean. I have an active household (all males!) so the floors get a lot of use (and abuse!) especially on the stairs and in the kitchen.
Hardwood is easy to live with if you install a wood which have a lot of grains (like oak) and to make sure the stain colour is not too light or too dark.

My whole house is hardwood (maple) and I love it. It is easy to keep, always looks terrifc and goes with any colour/look. It is great in the kitchen. I can't think of a reason not to put it there. It is more durable than vinyl and much easier to keep clean. The only room I don't have it in are the main bathrooms which are tile and are a real pain to kep them clean. I hate grout! (The powder room and even the laundry room are hardwood.)

hi there, read your post. Yes cork is lovely and very nice for a kitchen. A good friend had it in her kitchen and after just a few kitchen parties there were very noticable punctures in it due to the high heels that some women were wearing. I strongly suggest that you impliment a no shoes on policy to prevent the same happening to you. Perhaps the newer cork tiles have improved somewhat, this was 4 years ago. Just a thought.

Hi I would just like to say that I have done alot of research on flooring as we are going to build soon. I love hardwood but yes in very high traffic areas it is difficult to maintain particularly with pets and small children. Or in this case the bathroom. There is always the fear of warping and other miserable potentials. Anyhow what my husband and I have decided that the way to go is cork flooring. Not only is it lovely to look at but it has the same lifespan as hardwood and it is far easier on the joints (kitchen or anyother place that requires alot of standing). It also muffles alot of sound and insulates. It comes in many colors and chop textures. I love it. The best part though is that it alot easier on the budget but looks like a million bucks.

I have dark hardwood in my entry and hallway. It is very hard to keep clean, footprints (it's barefoot season again, ick), cat hair, not to mention cat scratches. This is Bruce flooring with a 25 yr warranty! I've had it six months. I plan to install hardwood in the LR and DR only for the sake of continuity and only with large area rugs to cover it.
