Harriet's home

Harriet's home from her overnight hospital stay. The blood tests showed that she is diabetic and has Cushings syndrome. She started on a new high-protein diet and twice-daily insulin shots. She's being weaned off the prednisone gradually over the next month and, once her blood sugar levels are stablized, we'll look at switching her to something else for her skin condition, probably cyclosporine. The Cushings will likely resolve itself after the prednisone is out of her system and the diabetes may even disappear or at least improve. We've still got a way to go to get her stablized and feeling her old self but at least she's on her way.

Oh I am so glad you are going to be rid of the pred. the cushing's should go away and that is where it should be, far away.

I bet once the protein diet is in place and the pred gone you will see a big improvement in both conditions and here's hoping you find a solution for her skin.

Glad to hear that Harriet is home!

Hopefully, all will be resolved as the pred is eliminated.

Take care:)

Thanks, PearlG, I probably should have taken Harriet to a doggie dermatologist a long time ago. My first vet even recommended it, but he said she needed to be off the prednisone for a few months before she could be tested. At that time, her skin was so bad, I didn't think she could stand being off her meds for that long, and I wasn't offered any alternative treatments. He had said that the dermatologist might be able to give her a series of injections to "desensitize" her to the source of her allergies, but my reading on the internet revealed that this was a pretty hit-or-miss proposition. I still think it's worth consulting a specialist, though, to see what kind of options they can offer me. Thanks, again.
