harvest table

I have 4 beautiful wooden table legs that I salvaged from my grandfather's house before it was demolished. I really want my DH to build something that would have a valued position in our house so I'm thinking about having him build a harvest table for my breakfast nook. My DH is very handy but he does want me to have all the design details worked out before he begins a project. I'm wondering what material to use for the top. Pine is probably the easiest wood to get but I'm afraid it would be too soft. Any suggestion or recommended design ideas would be greatly appreciated.

first i want to say cool project!

if you have the legs already then you are two thirds of the way there as far as any design details. i think that the legs should hold most of the detail in the table and the table top and apron should remain fairly simple.

dh made a harvest table out of pine floor boards keeping the edges simply squared and the apron was made from pine as well. it is extremely soft wood but that's the beauty of it. over time it will form a natural patina and look older than its years. i happen to love that look for the style of the table.

you certainly could go with a harder wood like maple or oak but in my humble opinion i think it is too sophisiticated of a wood for the true style of a harvest table.

good luck with the project!

here's a pic of the table dh made for our cottage kitchen:
