OK

well isnt it just a small world???
WOW, so you've seen first hand the changes which are taking place. I left in 1981, DH was already living here for 10 years then but he also grew up in Switzerland (we met when we were 12 years old, attending the same religious classes, which were mandatory then - not that we paid any attention!)
My garden ist still doing fine, we are not expecting any cooler weather soon, it's been very nice with some morning patches, Your hubby is going to enjoy fine BC fall weather when he arrives!
Thanks for the welcome.
my former sister in law is also Elisabeth but she goes by Liesl that's why I wondered. The influx of ppl from the east bloc countries is a HUGE problem, especially for Switzerland and Austria as they are both "neutral" countries. We lived not far from where they housed the refugees and it was like a huge prison..used to see them along the side of the road in the mornings hoping for work...or handouts, they often came with their kids knocking on the doors begging...was scary at times. The thing was if you helped one,,the others would soon follow. Its a bad situation. I once had my purse almost stolen on Mariahilferstrasse (the main shopping area) by a woman...oh well. Its nice to see that you consider Canada your home...did you meet your husband here or is he Swiss as well? In any case, a belated welcome to you...and how is the garden doing ? Have u had any autumn weather yet ? Our leaves havent started to turn yet and that's when I really love to take drives and see them all...My hubby is leaving today for Vancouver (hes from Burnaby).
No, it's not Liesl. Lisi is short for Elisabeth. So glad you got to see lots of Austria and neigbouring countries while you were there. I try to get over there every 2 years or so (have still family) but find alot of things are changing, there is a huge immigration wave taking place, especially from east block countries and absorbing all the different ethnic groups into small countries is not without problems. But the countryside is stunning, I had nothing but clear crisp late summer days and the mountains where gorgeous!!
is lisi short for liesl? I too not only dated a guy from Wien, I MARRIED him! Was not a happy marriage and altho we met here in Canada, after 7 yrs, he decided he wanted to move back to Austria. Wasnt a happy time for me ,not speaking one word of German...no Job, no friends or family there. I took my youngest daughter (from a first marriage) with me and she still lives there. I made some wonderful friends in the 8 years and we still keep in touch and 2 have visited me here in Canada...and I sure do miss the food and the people. One thing that I was able to do was to travel and see lots of the country...I have not been back since I returned in '92 and have since remarried. Oh and finally I was able to get on the album site and enjoyed everyone's pictures...
This is not a respond to your fish question, unfortunately I don't have an answer but I was just wondering if you were able to access the album. The easiest way is, if you go to the DD forum, Paula posted a link you can click on under designguys sad post. It gets you right to the site, all you have to
do is click on pictures.
WOW, you spent 8 years in Austria, this is so cool, I feel connected to you now, I used to date a guy in Wien!!
I overuse the word "apparently" :D
i am still trying to decide what's the best option for us...really dont like the idea of bringing them inside...dont want to be bothered with either the time or expense of an aquarium...for me...fish belong outside. We are so far going with the option of a "bubbler", as a heater apparently uses waaaaay too much hydro...the idea apparently is just to keep a small hole open for gases to escape. The fish will apparently survive and hibernate but they need a certain depth to do that, we shall see......will keep u posted
One of the articles I found mentions using a de-icer. I just bought one for a horse trough -- I've never used one before. so I have no idea how they work, but maybe that's an option?? The one I bought was on sale for less than $30. I got it at a farm supply store.
Depending on how many fish you have, you could maybe keep them in an aquarium in your house over the winter. I know someone who does that with her fish, and they seem to handle it OK. I also know someone who kept his fish in a large flower pot in his kitchen -- one of them jumped out and committed suicide, so maybe it's better to keep them somewhere that they have a view!!
no I havent but thanks to you I will...i did search some sites for other pond info...most "experts" say 24" is deep enough, sadly altho ours was SUPPOSED to be deep enough it isnt...we intend to try with a bubbler...we shall see, sure hate to lose the lil guys...have become pretty attached to them. Just wondered what experiences others have had...thanks again will check em out :)
Here are two URLs with some helpful info -- the second one is probably more helpful....

Going back to a geography class I had in Cegep that was all about water, I believe that as long as your pond is at least 4 feet deep, the fish can stay in the pond over the winter because the water below 4 feet won't freeze.
Have you done any Internet searches for wintering pond fish??
