Help with front door colour!

muranogirl's picture
muranogirl

Well, girls here's what my house looks like right now on the outside. I need to paint or stain the front door because it will warp apparently, if I don't soon. It's an 8 ft faux wood door. What colour do you think it should be? Should I stain it a dark walnut colour, or use a coloured stain for some drama?
It's not the best photo because of all the mess! The post on the porch will be in the arts and craft style where it's angled, sort of like an inverted triangle. The garage doors will be painted out the same as the trim I think.
The finish on the fixture over the front door is oil rubbed bronze. The holes in the gables will be filled with white elbow brackets.

Actually what Tryn2 paid is about right for a designated landscape designer consultation and full set of plans. Four years ago I paid $125/hr, 2 hr min just for the consultation and it was well worth it just in saving mistakes. The real time comes with them doing up plans that include plant/material lists which are great because they show you exactly where to put what so it's done right the first time vs getting out there once something is established and moving it (or like me, wondering what exactly that is that is coming up because my helpers kind of put things all over the place and now I get to wait and see).

Eyes, you might want to go chat up some people in paint stores or decor stores to see if you can get some info on what they think your service is worth. Also asking people who might be your typical customers helps (dogs come in handy here as there are always people to talk with while the dogs visit on walks and such). I think what you have to emphasize is your training as there are already a lot of mock up programs out there but your advantage is being able to pick appropriate colours etc..

holy ...that's alot of money...I prefer to do hand sketches over computer mock-ups.....wow thanks for the heads up...it's time for me to get out there...my neighbours keep approaching me asking me when I'm ready to start b/c they want to hire me....I guess it's just fear eh  crazy really! I have taken numerous courses too; colour theory, drafting, illustration and presentation...etc...so it's not like I don't know what I'm doing that side of it..it's just the other side  the what the heck do I charge side of it!

Yikes, $750 is a lot of money for plans!! We paid a landscaper $75 a few years ago -- mind you, that was for just a drawing (not sure if it's even to scale) and plant suggestions. From the sound of it, you'll be getting more detailed plans.

Are you and your family going to do the work yourselves?? You can save a lot of money that way, and you'll have the satisfaction of knowing that you created your beautiful front yard :)

eys, what are you doing hanging around here?! Go hit the pavement and get your business rolling!!!!! :confetti:

Whoops -- forgot to say what I originally meant to say :o muranogirl, I normally prefer to have the garage door colour match the siding colour. But in your case, I think the two garage doors should be painted the same colour (a brown like in eys's mock-up). It looks a bit choppy otherwise, with a different colour on the front door, middle garage door, and second garage door. And the orangey or rusty door colour really stands out nicely :)

well eys I met with my landscape designer this morning...and she is charginig me $750 bucks to give me a design/mock up to scale......so it is a lucrative business.....I think it will be worth it because she will give us the "master plan"..actually 2 scenarios and then we can do things in stages....she was saying that for what I want to do would cost at least $20,000 bucks...man landscaping is super expensive........but the back of my house is outstanding and I mean that not in a bragging way...the previous owners went all out.....but the front is blah....no one cared because it is close to the road and loud...so it is not a priority area for entertaining.....BUT it is where all the guests come in so it needs to have some curb appeal..........so eys,,,,,I think you should take the plunge...start small....this lady had her business cards at our local nursery.....and i took one and called.....I really liked her...she was not pushy...had good ideas .....asked what I wanted and then took a whack of digital pictures....a copy of my survey and she sketched a drawing with full measurements during the hour and half she was here..........I will post her feedback...she said it will take her a few weeks......................so if you have the knack....go for it!!!!!...............

Really like the mock up. Well done.

As for painting trim, if you use the right primer (like Zinsser) it's no problem. I did the last house which had the metal trims when my mom was still living there and that was still holding when I sold. I guess it would have been at least 5 years and that's good for exterior and Calgary is considered to have a very had climate on exterior paints.

One thing I have heard (can't say if it's true) is with vinyl trims it can be better to wait for a year or so as the weather will rough the surface up a little which makes it a better surface for the primer to stick to. Meanwhile when I painted the door trim at the new house I had the builder's painters told me they were designed to be painted so no problem to go ahead. I used the Zinsser again and it was fine although I only lived there 1.5 yrs so can't say beyond that.

I painted mine over 2 years ago and they still look great....I did prime them first with a good quality primer 2 coats.

That is a beautiful mock-up. I love all your choices.
Do you know, once you paint all the eves , how often would you have to redo them or are you set for quite a few years. I have never painted over that type of material and always wondered about that.

yw...i would also do the post willow...white draws your eye sometimes...im not a huge fan of white on outdoor space...anyways here's the mock up so you can see..im glad you like it :)

I suggested BM Willow for your front door never thought of it for the garage doors, great mock up eys. I like the brown colour suggestion too.

Wow eyes! You have talent! Thank you so much! That's by far my favorite choice so far! Would you leave the upper on the post white? The bracket shelves in the eves will be white....

lol...forgot to post the colours....BM Seed Brown for the Door and the trim, garage door and shutters all BM Willow :)

Here's my choice for colours...beautiful house btw! I would soften all that stone work with a vine growing up the side of your house too. :)

Okay, I'm not as talented as some others to suggest possible colours, but I really like DBD's first mck-up with the garage doors coloured like your second floor shingles. As for your door, I would definitely stain vs paint to keep with the craftsman theme.

Your house is shaping up beautifully! Sounds like you are carefully planning every single detail. I can't imagine how much work you have had to do and how many choices you have been making!

I am not sure if this is the style you've chosen for garage - anyway, I played with PS keeping in mind that garage doors are the same as siding colour. As always you have more than one option for entrance door (I would take inspiration from the brick - it offers multiple choices), depending if you want more dramatic or blended color.
Good luck!

Lasalle's picture

I have the BM brochure for the solid stain only at home. so for the front door my brown choices would be Butternut, Misson Brown, Russet Brown. Keep us posted on your decision.

Zulu's picture

I have been looking at the sample photos that you just posted.
I am thinking that the door on the first photo would be a nice colour choice for your door and then the color of the garages on your last photo would look nice on your garage doors.

Inglewood's picture

I didn't realize that there was another garage door. Paint the one to the far right the same colour as the siding. Paint the main garage door to blend in with the brick. This way the garages won't take center stage and over impower the house.
I usually wouldn't recommend two different garage door colours but I believe this would be ideal for your house.

With that piece of info about going for a craftsman style, I think you should just find a stain that mimics cedar or red oak or some N.American wood. The one thing about craftsman style is the use of wood, natural wood, and since your garage doors will be painted the only opportunity you have left to bring in that element is the door. It would also go very well with your brick and siding. Some lead divisions or stained glass would be neat in those side lights too,

I forgot to say before that I love your Porch Light and also the detail on your door is beautiful.

I think your front door looks good with the style of home you have chosen. I never noticed the other garage door until someone pointed them out so now I am trying to think how they should be painted.

I would keep them the Linen colour for now until the front door is painted then decide if you want to change the colour of them. I think a brown colour is the way to go but more medium colour in tone rather than a chocolate brown. Did you look at any of the brown colours I suggested? What brand of stain are you planning on using? BM has some nice solid and semi-transparent colours to choose from.

I do have the brochure in the garden shed, I look at it in the morning to see if anything catches my eye...

If you go for the arts and crafts style, I am not sure how those glass inserts on the both sides of the entrance door will look. Do you have ehough space to install double door? I think it would be better for the chosen style.

MrsFancy. Thanks for the advice. I will wait on the garage doors and see how they look once installed. They are coming painted in linen the same as the siding on the house. Also they are arched like the front door with a bronze "handle" to make it look more arts and crafts style and I can't remember for sure (it's been sooo long since we ordered it) but I think that it had windows too.
The glass on the side of the doors will look better once the guard comes off of the sides of the front door and you can see the white trim. I wanted white grills but couldn't put them there because the house next to us already had them there. I've see white grills that you can add after the fact.
We paid alot for the door so I don't think that we'll be alterring it. The community is american arts and crafts style not spanish. They usually only had one door...

Here's some examples...

I like the first mock-up DBD did for the garage door (Browny) and the second to last for the front door(orangey)
