Help with living room decorating

We just moved into a 1950s home, and I am having difficulty coming up with a decorating plan for our living room that includes our apartment size piano and black leather sofa. I would like to buy two upholstered chairs, bookcases, an area rug, coffee and size table, throw cushions, new drapes, and accessories. (Ikea chair, baby toys, and ottoman (?) won't stay) Any advice on furniture placement, new furniture/accessory selection, and paint colour would be appreciated!

Hi, I believe the azure as well as grey plan works nicely for the darkish wooden floors

Erin: the piano can either fit on the wall where it is currently placed, along the wall where the sofa is, or between the two windows. We will not have a TV is this space. Dimensions are 13.2'x16'.

Looks great, horseshoe_lake! You could get even more advice from our Ask A Designer column?

Hi,

I like the piano, but am not sure if it's suitable to be the focal point of the room, which it is right now. Would it fit on the wall around the corner where the chair is now? If not, I think your idea of the 2 bookcases would balance it out nicely, however, I would skip the bridging shelf and hang a piece of art instead.

What are the dimensions of your room?

You didn't mention....will there be a tv going in here as well?

Erin

Thanks dytecture!

I was leaning towards blue, but initially had lighter, blue-gray shade in mind. Do you think that could still work?

What do you think about placing two white bookcases on either side of the piano, with a bridging shelf in between? And two upholstered slipper chairs opposite the sofa?

Hello, I think a blue and gray scheme would work well with the dark wood flooring and the black sofa.
