Painting hint when they day a foam roller my painter told DH to buy the Velvet roller for a smooth finish and man did it ever work. It is just small like the foam ones but a streak free finish they are more money but he was able to do all the baseboards and 20 doors with one roller so I guess it was worth the $6.95.
I would absolutly paint it. Because it's wood use oil primer and oil paint. Give it a light sand, (gently like you are washing your face, no need to bring it back to wood) Then prime with oil because it probably has an oil based varnish or stain on it. Then paint with 2 coats oil paint. I would try Farrow and Ball Oil Full Gloss. It has a high sheen, so it would look like it was professionally done. I've painted with it before and it's great. I used a foam roller and it looks like it was sprayed!! I saw a peice like yours done in full gloss in a whitish blue colour and they had wallpapered the back of it. And Gorgeous! Painting furniture isn't that bad, but it will make you peice look like a million bucks!!
Good Luck
You could always Craiglist it!
Reno, whats "OTT"?? I think your post was just fine. I wanted to tell Paul's buddy to load it back onto the truck when it arrived...but that would've been rude. :)
Gimme a little while to finish getting settled, and then we'll start on the buffet makeover. I am sooooooooooo appreciative of all the ideas/pics you gals have posted...keep them coming!!
The table and chairs looks pretty much just like the ones in the photo Reno posted. Not the prettiest. LOL
Mel
Mel, hope you don't think my last post was OTT, sorry if it was.
just found this for $850 on kijiji
I like it with the mirror too. How ugly is the table & chair set?
I like the 2nd picture that sweetpea posted with the buffet and mirror. We had a tv entertainment unit that we took the top part off and only used the bottom and we couldnt believe how great it looked. Even if you find something better later, you can always use the piece for storage or maybe in a hallway or mudroom.
I guess BigMama & I were thinking alike at the same time :)" great minds think alike" ;) ...I have posted pics for ideas. :)
Hey Ladies,
As of today, the hutch part is in the basement, and I'm planning to paint the buffet black and add new hardware. However, thst plan could change at any time. LOL!!! Especially if I see a dining room set that I REALLY want for a good price... :p
:) Mel
hey Mel
If you want a more modern look to it ...I would take off the hutch part , paint it black add some new cool hardware. And if you wanted to take a step further, square off bottom and remove legs and add wheels .
Hi Mel; Have you decided what to do yet with the cabinet?......I was thinking to modernize it you could remove the hutch part & refinish the bottom ....then use it as a buffet with a large bevelled mirror over it. :)
What can I do to modernize it??????
 Mel
sorry, but my first thought was a can of gasoline and a match . . . .
If you don't really need it, keep the table, maybe get new chairs, and lose the hutch
Yes. go get some Zinsser BIN 123 and read the can. it says no sanding (although I'd do a light scuff, just a once over). Then you can paint with whatever you like.
Not sure but a light sand and Fresh Start by BM should do it.
Ok, another question.....whats the easiest (read least amount of sanding time required) way for me to paint it???? Can I just buy that magical primer and then paint???? Please say yes....I HATE sanding!!
My first thought was to paint it and go French Country IF THAT'S WHAT YOU LIKE. If you don't, get rid of it. If your friends gave it to you then they shouldn't be concerned if you make money on it or not. You can tell them it didn't fit in the new house or something even. Chances are they couldn't be bothered to sell it and won't mind.
Just saw this on Craiglist. $500 for Vilas table & 6 chairs. This is about the plainest I've seen. Don't know if they'll sell but I'd be surprised if they don't. I hope you have a separate dining area.

If your chairs aren't too busy - though I doubt it - you could look at having them professionally stripped & refinished in a dark stain.
Haha Flowerpot!!! We haven't tried the sheets yet..the bed doesn't get delivered till friday. I'll let ya know after the weekend.

I love the hardware on the pieces. But I tend to be so boring tradational, probably my age lol. I can't spell either. Also I agree with the other ladies, black would be nice. Sweetpea's idea of cream is really a great idea.
I think what ever you do ,you are going to have a big sanding job.
By the way how are those new sheets
Flowerpot.
Really? You think people would pay "money" for this???
Also, I just realized in my original post I said "80's country" I meant 70's!!!!
I'm thinking about taking the hutch off...and maybe painting the buffet a nice high gloss black. I don't have the table yet, but I know it's round and not a pedestal...so I'm assuming it probably has turned legs to coordinate with the buffet/hutch. Maybe leave the table top as is...and paint the legs? I'm not sure. I'll have a better idea once Paul's buddy delivers the table and chairs.
Thanks!!!!!!!!
Check in the drawers or the back for the company name. It will be solid wood - probably maple. Too bad friends gave it to you, you can sometimes get a very good dollar at the antique stores. I know it's not an antique but the stores want it.
Now to your problem. You might be able to paint but the finish isn't going to come off easily and may even be a major problem taking paint. The base isn't too busy. What are the chairs and table like. Could you cover the table with a vibrant cloth and just use the base of the buffet? Put the top in the basement. It would get you through for a while and then you could sell it. Take some pictures to a dealer and have them tell you what they might give you for it.
I think this was big in the 70's. If it is the line that I am thinking of you will need to give it a good sanding before painting or staining.
I agree that the wavy pieces along the top and side are what make it very traditional. If you need to keep the top part of the hutch then I suggest that you also remove the door on the upper part and leave that open. I would also remove and replace the hardware. What about giving it a black stain in a high gloss?
Mel, The set is lovely ,it looks like it is solid wood,it has great potential I think it would look great painted in either cream or black.
I have posted some inspirational pics of French Country sets . :)
Were you thinking of stripping it? Not sure what kind of wood it is or the quality.
Painting it is an option. Remove and change the hardware, depends on your taste you can go nickel, pewter or that new burnished bronze look.
Change the glass to bevel. If you can remove the scallop piece on the top half or change the colonial style spindles that would make it more contemporary. Other than that a good starting piece, nice gift to receive.
