Havent lived in a house in 30 years and dont even know how to take care of the lawn. Where do I start? I've read that grass clippings no longer get picked up by garbage pick up so what do you do with them?

There's always composting too....not only do you have somewhere to put your clippings, but your get fantastic compost for your garden for free! Before I started composting, I had to take my clippings to a landfill transfer station in my town. Along with all the recycle bins, they have 2 huge bins for yard waste. Depending on where you live, they may have something like this for you. I know when I lived in S. Ontario, they had "green bin" pickup for compostable materials. Call your city hall/regional district tomorrow and ask what people do in your area.
